Tissot Powermatic 80 18ct Solid Gold and Asian Games Special

Tissot has recently released two special edition Powermatics. One takes the Powermatic 80 and transforms it into a watch with 18ct solid gold casing, and retailing for just 2000 Euros. The second is a Special Edition watch released for the Asian Games 2014 which will be hosted in Incheon South Korea in September.

Innovative manufacturing has allowed Tissot to do this using the electroforming technique so as to reduce the price of solid 18ct gold watches. The technique means there is almost no wastage of the precious metal when compared to traditional machining techniques that reduce a vast amount of the raw material to swarf. The 40mm watch is available in 18ct yellow or rose gold and is powered by Tissot’s Swiss made PowerMatic 80 automatic movement with an 80 hour power reserve. As with all Powermatics the watch features a sapphire crystal and exhibition caseback and is water resistant to 30m.

At around 695 Euros is the Powermatic 80 celebrating the Asian Games, to be held this year in September in South Korea at a cost of $1.62 billion. Tissot is ensuring that anyone who is remotely interested in the Games has a chance to acquire an affordable aspirational Tissot Swiss watch to commemorate the occasion. There are also special editions of the PR 100 automatic and PRC 200 quartz available as well as sporty models in the T-Touch range. Not a bad marketing move considering India and Indonesia alone account for 1.2 billion and 246 million people respectively. And that’s not including China with a population of 1.3 billion. Tissot will shift container loads of watches before the first starting pistol is fired.

The Luxury Automatic (Powermatic 80) has proven to be very popular since its release in 2013 and it is great to see two new models being released, one in gold and one special edition.

The gold version reminds me of the Le Locle.
