Picture Dodane presents the black PVD Type 23

For the first time in its history, French brand Dodane – founded in 1857 and specialising in military chronographs – presents a black PVD finish for one of its two iconic models, the Type 23.

Over the years, the Type 23 has become a watchmaking touchstone in the world of aviation. The Type 23’s technical properties have fuelled its rise to the status of benchmark navigational instrument. The timepiece boasts a chronograph movement from Dubois Depraz, a hundred-year-old firm which has earned a worldwide reputation for the quality and reliability of its complications. The Type 23 is now embarking on a new chapter in its history.

An acclaimed caliber – and certified accuracy
Dodane 1857 has now brought out a civilian version of its Type 23, developed using funds from the sale by subscription of 600 mechanical watches and 150 quartz watches to members of France’s Air Force.

Its Calibre 2030 is designed to meet military requirements of toughness and accuracy – indeed, by placing a special order, Type 23 owners can request certification of their watch by the Besançon Observatory.

The Observatory certifies the isochronism of each timepiece, taken and tested individually using procedures similar to those of the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute COSC (using the same ISO 3159 standard). The Besançon Observatory is also one of the centres of expertise for the International Chronometry Competition, which gives an award every two years to watches selected from among the most accurate in the world.

A new look – and even sturdier
The PVD version of the Type 23 gives it a new look that is both intense and sober. The version’s thicker luminescent hour markers and hands offer enhanced readability, while the case and crown give it a new, discreetly elegant air of distinction.

The PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) treatment consists in vacuum spray application of a very high quality titanium nitride metal coating. PVD-treated parts have a different aspect, with a black/anthracite colour, as well as a marked improvement in scratch resistance compared to the original steel, thus confirming the Type 23’s vocation as the sturdiest of timepieces – capable of meeting most everyday and professional requirements without any risk of damage or premature wear.

Contemporary styling – and an immaculate finish
The Type 23 is 42.5 mm in diameter. This contemporary format provides optimum readability, in line with the military specification requirements which have shaped Dodane’s destiny. It also allows the Type 23 to blend in with most urban and professional settings without being too showy.

The movement’s finish, visible through the sapphire back, is a reminder of the demanding requirements and high level of care Dodane provides for each of its timepieces: blued screws, ‘Côtes de Genève’ decoration, chamfered, rhodium-plated, pearl-polished and snailed bridges, snailed barrel cover, and etched “Dodane 1857” lettering.

The Flyback – the sign of a legendary chronograph
The movement also comes in a Flyback version. This option is similarly based on a Swiss Made Dubois Depraz mechanical movement: version 42030. This tried-and-tested caliber enables chronographic measurements in progress to be reset and restarted instantaneously by pressing just once on one of the buttons.

This function is widespread in aviation. It can be used to measure a number of successive short periods with unrivalled precision, without having to stop the chronograph by pushing a button, reset it by pushing it again, and restart it by pressing a third and final time. The Flyback, a genuine watch complication featuring on the very best chronographs, makes it possible to carry out all these operations by pressing just once, minimising any gaps in time measurement by dispensing with the need to repeat this action twice more.

The Dodane spirit – fully customisable
For the new PVD version, the buttons, case, crown and lugs all feature the same black finish, giving the timepiece an overall aesthetic appearance that’s just perfect.

The Black PVD Type 23 is available immediately in chronograph and flyback chronograph versions. Faithful to its own tradition, Dodane also allows each buyer to customise a large number of elements, from etchings on the caseback (on models with a solid back) to the strap, as well as the option of chronometric certification by the Besançon Observatory. Prices for the black PVD Type 23 start at 2770 euros.

    About Dodane 1857
Founded in 1857, the Dodane manufacture quickly gained renown throughout the world of watchmaking for its ethos of research. Alphonse Dodane and his father-in-law François-Xavier Joubert originally had the idea of creating a watchmaking factory and design workshop deep in the Doubs gorges – and there have been five successive generations at the helm since then. Still run by the Dodane family, today the firm is one of the few remaining fully independent watchmakers. Since 1930, Dodane has been one of the most respected official suppliers to military aviation, leading fighter squadrons, civilian aviation and international organisations including NATO. The Type 21 and Type 23 chronograph models now embody the brand’s commitment to this world of precision and stringent requirements. Dodane is also one of the world’s leading suppliers of onboard chronographs.

Re: Dodane presents the black PVD Type 23

The type 23 quartz at 1350 Euros seems quite a good deal for a nicely designed Ana-Digi with a Breitling movement, seems to be the old one though, no back lighting and I am not sure it is a thermocompensated movement either.

But the case and design looks solid, I like it.
The biggest drawback to me would be the lack of ticking second hand...

    Cheers Pierre

Re: Dodane presents the black PVD Type 23

Hi, I like this new Dodane Type 23 PVD chrono. However, I would certainly like to hear pilots', e.g. Ron's and Dennis', thoughts about it.

For the Type 23 quartz Dodane could have installed an analog thermocompensated quartz movement like 27 jewels ETA caliber 251.233, instead of a multidisplay 7 jewels ETA 988.333 movement. Anyway, the Type 23 auto seems to be quite ok.
