The 2017 Watch Purchasing Abstinence Club (WPAC).......

The 2017 Watch Purchasing Abstinence Club (WPAC) .

Welcome to the 2017 Watch Purchasing Abstinence Club. This tiny corner of f71 is a safe place for those that are intending to abstain from buying watches over the rest of 2017.

Here you can take solace from like minded f71 brethren and get support and encouragement. We can even swap and share coping strategies for getting through what will be a tough time.

My own personal reasons for this is that I've spent far too much and this hobby has absorbed a lot of time and need to stop buying! Yes, I could just stop visiting here, but that just feels like cutting off my nose to spite my face.......

So, who's joining me? I know valuewatchguy is thinking about this, anyone else?

Propsed ground rules (thanks to valuewatchguy for these):

    1. No new purchases until 1/1/18. Preorders count as a purchase even if delivery is in 2018.
    2. Trades are okay but must result in no $ spent to make up the difference.
    3. Any incoming or pending preorders to be disclosed up front.
    4. New straps are okay.
    5. Sales are okay but $ can not be reappointed to a new purchase.
    6. Free watches are okay.
    7. One exception allowed for the year, but on the basis of one in one out.
    8. Photos are allowed, but preferably with the intention of getting talked out of another pointless/frivolous purchase.

.......and just so everyone is clear this isn't a deadly serious thread (well, look at the rules ) and for those like me who really do want to try and cut down then it's an encouragement!

Does the abstinence club require total abstinence? I don't want to buy anything more in 2017 unless two watches that I've been seeking for many years pop up. What I'm trying to abstain from are impulse purchases since I've done enough of those in the last year.

We're a non-judgemental club, if you fall off the wagon that's OK.........

I'm in. For a few days I thought I might sell my current collection of 15 "affordables" (nothing over $500) to make a down payment one a single "grail" watch like maybe an Omega Speedmaster man-on-the-moon watch or a Rolex Submariner or Daytona, but I reconsidered that urge based on my love of variety.

I'm in. Bought only one watch last year (Timex Waterbury on a whim) but it doesn't get much wear. Neither does much else TBH except my SKX013 bought in 2009 that just keeps chugging along and have been wearing it continually for the last six weeks or so. Still love it and haven't felt the urge for anything else. Still looks like new and accuracy, though good, is less of an issue with me as time goes on (pun intended). So, yeah, you can keep your new and shiny - there's nothing like endurance and longevity for bonding with just one watch. Besides, after all these years, very little appeals. All (well, most) I see is overpriced tat and you're screwed over twice with eye-watering servicing costs. So, easy peasy lemon squeezy, sez I!

This is kind of like a teetotaler joining AA isn't it? Either way we welcome your cyncism.

Okay, I'm in. I'll consider it a success if I avoid all impulse purchases and continue to chase the two elusive pieces that I've been after for a long time.

    Brilliant .

I'm not sure that I want to have exceptions; feels like a weakening of the resolve . Having said that I really liked the MWW 62mas and now that a bracelet is available I might have to have that as the one exception?!

New club rule, one exception is allowed? Also strap purchases are exempt? All those in favour?

Selling to consolidate one's collection seems acceptable and a grail would count as the one exception!

........I'm not exactly sticking to the title of this club am I?
