I too am kinda new to the watch "scene". I have always liked watches every since I was a kid but never took the time to learn about movements, brands, etc....

I'm slowly learning and I fear it will be the death of my checkbook at some point. My problem is I have a wife, two kids and the various other anti-hobby expenses that preclude me from going on any kind of wild buying spree. Right now I'm focused on getting a few humble Seiko divers and at some point when it's fiscally reasonable I'd like to be able to purchase a few higher quality pieces (Oris, Omega, Panerai....)

I'll help paddle...cause I'm in the exact same boat!!!

This is an excellent post for a newbie as I am, IMHO. Pointing out the "dangers" of an out of the budget buying rush! Thank you guys for sharing your approaches, it will help to handle those almost irrational impulses as they raise from the bottom or my WIS soul...
So far I only purchased 3 in one year, all of them quite affordable autos (not a big budget at this time).
I took at least two months before pulling the trigger, and read as much as I can about the piece I want. If I still have the buying impulse after saturating my system with info about the watch in question, then is time to gather the money.

I know what you guy's mean. I've been spending quite a bit of money since November 2007 on watches. I do have 1 more piece to add to my collection and once done, that's it. We're planning on starting a family soon, so it would be one of those last purchases for quite some time. And most likely I will try to ignore the forum since I believe its part of the addiction.

I'm after a speedy myself and thinking of quiting cigarettes. How's that going for you? 37 packs ignored, right? Over here in the Netherlands one pack of 25 goes for €4,50 actually 23 for 4,40 (they put less in a pack to make it seem cheaper) that is like $7 a pack.

I do about a pack a day that is 7x365= $2555 a year. HELLO speedy (used) and some other handsome watch.

Honestly, what a great way to quit smoking -- make a pact with yourself that with no exceptions, if you smoke a single cigarette during the next year, no speedy =)

If I hadn't gotten hit with an unexpected car repair bill I would have bought it already.
Soon enough (next year...)
