    Casio Beside

"Beside" is a collection of watches from Casio. It is part of Casio´s Standard line. I have been looking at the designs, and recently I brought myself to buy one. Once I got it, I was pleasantly surprised with it.

The model I got is the BEM-503L-7AV quartz chronograph. Some factory specs:

    1/1-second stopwatch:
    Measuring capacity: 29'59
    Measuring mode: Elapsed time

Analog timekeeping: 3 hands (Hour, minute, second), 3 dials (Stopwatch minute and second, 24-hour)

    Accuracy: ±20 seconds per month

Approx. battery life: 2 years on SR621SW

Size of case / total weight:
    BEM-503L : 46.5 X 41.4 X 10.4 mm / 70 g

    WR: 50m

There are some details that do not show in the pictures, but in person, the dial looks beatiful. The second hand aligns perfectly with the markers, and fit and finish on the case is great.

I put it on a Hirsch strap, and I found I have been wearing it a lot lately. I bought the Casio Beside and an Orient Mako together. I thought they would be good "bang for the buck" pieces. Once I got both, the Mako was sold, while the Casio is a keeper.

Anyone else has any experience with the Beside line?

Wow, beautiful watch. Casio is really starting to upgrade their line, first with the Oceanus and now with this one.

Thanks Timecacher. Indeed, Casio is trying to upgrade their line. But the Oceanus line is on a whole different level than the Beside line.

The Oceanus watches have solar and atomic capabilities, sapphire crystals, and are packed with the latest technology available from Casio. Prices go from 400$ to 1000$. The line includes the model OCW-P500 Cachalot:

It is on my wishlist. Price is around 750$.

The Beside line is much simpler, and all the models come with mineral glass, and simple (but reliable) quartz movements. The level of detail, fit and finish is what takes the Beside line one step above the rest of Casio´s standard line, to the point where I consider them the best bang for the buck on a quartz based watch. Hold one of these in your hand, and the quality shines through.

The model I bought, the BEM-503L-7AV, goes for 65$ on ebay, new in box.

The Beside collection has a lot of different designs. Prices go from 40$ to 70$. I think I am gonna end up buying one or two more. I really like the one I have.

The Oceanus line had some affordable models too. I picked this one up for $39.99.

Awesome. That´s a first generation Oceanus, right?

I can see it has sapphire. Is it solar too?

The price is almost too good to be true.

The Beside pictured has a sort of 'seventies' look I like with the baton hands and rectangular hour markers. Thanks for sharing, I have not seen these.

Very nice! Good score for $39.99. Casio has always made good affordable everyday-wear digital watches, but they've got some really nice analog quartz chronograph models within their basic "sport" line as well as their Edifice line. It's interesting to see them upscaling their brand with the Edifice Gold collection and the Oceanus collection. It finally places them into a market usually dominated by the likes of Seiko, Citizen and Bulova (among others). As to their Beside line of watches, I'm not to sure how or why they chose the name "Beside" for that particular collection, but they seem to look dressier and a bit more classic looking than one would normally expect from Casio.

I'm gonna have to look into Casio more... I am really digging some of the Edifice watches.

Is that a GMT hand there, or alarm?

I had wondered the same thing. Looks like it's an alarm:
