HELP - Can't get case back back on the watch

A thread on what type of batteries are in most common quartz watches got me curious. So... I popped the back of an old Guess quartz watch that has been sitting powerless for some time. It;s the first time I used the case back removing tool that came with my beginers tools set. Got the case back to pop off with no problem, but now I can't get it back on.

One half seems to seat, but I can't push the other half on no matter how hard I try. Any suggestions?

The watch uses a 377/376 BTW.

do you have any spray silicone? is so, spray some on a Q-tip, then apply around the rubber gasket. This might be enough lube to assist the seating of the gasket.

Also, make certain the gasket is not twisted or plugged up with dried wrist cheese.

Thanks - inpected for cheese and still no luck. Problem doesn't appear to be the gasket. I poopped the back off of a few others and they popped back on with minimal force. I wonder if I need a press to get all sides to go in evenly??? It tilts as I'm trying to push it in and the "high side" won't budge.

That's called a press-fit caseback. Usually you need a special tool (called a "press") to put it back on. The tool puts even pressure across the entire caseback to press it into place. You can either get the tool (they're sold on eBay) or take it to a watchmaker and have it pressed on.

You need a case back press, I got one a Harbor Freight Tools. I took it to the Dakota shop at the mall the first time and they pressed it on for me for free. Just stop trying now, it won't go on by hand.

$13.99 above link, comes with a bunch of disc sizes.

Yeah you definitely need one. In the beginning I tried to get around buying one by using a MacGyvered vise, but it was just too difficult. It's a good investment if you're going to be opening watches a lot.

Re: HELP - Can't get case back back on the watch

Thanks to all for the input. It's a cheap watch, so I might just dump it. I can get the backs off and on my other quartz watches without a press so I may just delay the press purchase for a while.
