Lightbulb I Make a Motion to Standardize the Posting of Pictures on WUS Affordables

WHEREAS: Since the WUS server upgrades a few months ago there are now 3 ways people post photographs.

    1. Paste an image URL directly into a forum post using the "Image" button on the forum toolbar.
    2. Upload an image from a hard drive to a forum post using the "Attachments" button on the forum toolbar.
    3. Import an image from another website to a forum post using the "Attachments" button on the forum toolbar.

WHEREAS: Only the first of the above-three methods provides a clickable URL link in WUS email updates.

WHEREAS: The other two methods either show nothing at all (method 2) or "[ATTACH]" (method 3) in WUS email updates.

WHEREAS: Methods 2 and 3 require opening the actual WUS thread to see the photographs instead of simply clicking on a link in the WUS email update.

WHEREAS: In threads like "The Best Submariner Homage" and "Incoming What Have You Got in the Mail at the Moment" this can be a very cumbersome prospect.

IT IS THEREFORE MOVED: That in the WUS Affordables community everyone shall open an image hosting account (e.g., with Flickr, Photobucket, ImageShack, Picasa, etc.) and shall from this day forward only use method 1, above, to insert images of their beautiful watches into forum posts.

This would make my life much easier and allow me to feed my WUS addiction with less inconvenience. Thank you for your consideration. That is all. Carry on.

Re: I Make a Motion to Standardize the Posting of Pictures on WUS Affordables

One disadvantage to method #1, although it is the method I generally use (since I presume hosting my own photos reduces the load on the WatchuSeek servers) is that if a poster cancels or otherwise ceases to hold the photo hosting account, all the poster's photos that were in that old account disappear from archived posts.

I found this out when I changed hosting for the AMCHPR and all my AMCHPR photos. Many of my older posts no longer contain my photos since the links no longer point to a valid photo URL. That problem becomes worse since (after a certain amount of time) it is not possible to return to the old posts to edit the links by inserting new URLs so that the photos show again.

I agree in principal (or maybe in principle) and it is the method I have always used.
AT makes a good point though. I actually deliberately broke a load of my older photobucket links a while ago because I was exceeding my bandwidth allowance.

When searching older, sometimes years ago, threads I've noticed pictures have been deleted and couldn't understand why. Even some new threads don't show any.
All is clear now, so perhaps '2' would be better. So far I havn't any pic.accounts and upload from hd

I agree with arktika, anything gained by using method 1 is lost when people change their photo housing sites. I'd rather be able to see the pictures on older posts.

Well, fine then. Do what works best for you.

I've been on WUS for nearly 3 years, and haven't changed my photo host yet. As far as I can tell, all my old shots are still there. Photobucket seems to be the biggest breaker of URL's for some reason.

I've always just pushed the image button and put in the URL (either from elsewhere on the web, or my photobucket account). A couple of months ago, the interface changed and it now defaults to the attach option. For the same reason others have mentioned (old images disappearing), I've stuck with attaching unless the URL doesn't allow it. That is often the case with my photobucket images because it won't accept URL encoded spaces.

It seems to me that the email summary function is broken and should convert attachments to URLs so that they work. I'd also like to see the attachment feature fixed so that it doesn't choke on URL encoding. If those two were fixed, attachments would be, by far, the best way to go.

Yeah, the Photobucket URL contains the folder the photo is in whereas for Flickr it's just a Flickr.com followed by a unique identifier.

Re: I Make a Motion to Standardize the Posting of Pictures on WUS Affordables

I don't do any of those. I paste the "IMG" code given by Photobucket directly into the post. No need to fiddle with the image button in the forum to add the tags. If you're already getting the image URL from a site like photobucket, you might as well just get the IMG code that's right under it instead and skip the unnecessary step.

Why everyone wouldn't just do this has always been confusing to me. I guess maybe some people don't feel it's favorable to load images into photobucket rather than go to the hassle of browsing your hard drive for an image to attach every time you want to post a picture...but that just doesn't make sense to me. A lot of times I like already having a photo ready to go in photobucket since I may well want to post that picture numerous times. So much simpler, and it's easier on your readers not to have to click links or view half size pop-up images or whatever else attaching causes.
