Another one, is Seiko. No, they don't just make medium/mediocre watches.
However, they do keep their best stuff for themselves. Watches and fishing reels come to mind. (JDM is Japan Domestic Market)
SeiyaJapan | Grand Seiko | G-Shock | Seiko Spirit | Prospex | Marinemaster | Citizen | SEIKO Mechanical SARB065 Cocktail Time
(Interesting how some countries will export their best, and some will keep it for themselves.)

Bernhardt Officer. It is a bit larger than a typical dress watch (44mm) but is simple and classy in my opinion. Here is mine.

Unless you want to spend huge amounts money, you'd want to get a mass produced product, for parts interchangeability. The new Shanghai watches are more than decent and at very sensible prices, and if I want a Chinese-made watch it'd better say so on the dial, but that's just me really.
Sea-Gull is like the Rolex of China. (Or maybe the Swatch group would be a better analogy?) There are many bad cheap watches sold from China, and a few of them even use movements purchased from Sea-Gull, but almost any watch branded as Sea-Gull has a surprisingly good build quality in my experience. I have vintage and modern Sea-Gulls and they all keep excellent time and look beautiful, these shown below with sapphire crystal, high beat mechanical movement, equal to my good Swiss watches. Have a look at www.usseagull.com, run by Kevin Ma who is a friend of this forum and one of the good guys in the business. These are both under $300, the 816.351 and the Wuyi special edition. They look even better in person than I can capture in photo, and they live on a shelf with my favorite Swiss and German watches.

Too many watches, not enough wrists.
Bulova has been around for a long, long time. They're a reputable, historic watch brand. I like the sweeping of the second hand on their Precisionist line.
Nearly $800 is a bit much for a quartz watch, IMO. I think you're really paying for the gold with that one. I believe you can find a very similar aesthetic for quite less money. I would also be hesitant to recommend dropping that kind of coin now, because as you see more watches your tastes will quickly evolve.
Cool story Hansel
Stowa Antea KS!
Or a close second is the Tissot Vissodate.
I recently bought a Beijing ZhuFeng (Everest) which is a classic and a really beautiful watch.
White enamel dial with electroplating platinum hands, markers, numbers and Tiananmen logo. 38mm stainless steel (316L) case with two sapphire crystals. 10mm thin.
Soft black genuine alligator band and butterfly buckle.
Well finished Beijing SB18 movement :
Côtes de Genève plate finish
Spotted internal finish
Screwed gold chatons with red ruby jewels decorated movement
Swan neck adjuster
Actually one of the best finished movement I have ever seen!
Very accurate with less than 6 sec a week.
I bought it on TaoBao with this agent for $320 to France.
You can see many pictures of this watch here. Some are mine, other are from forums...
