    Types of watches (features/complications)

Hi everyone, as someone new to this hobby I am sure you will understand that it can be a bit overwhelming at times. Auto, Manual, Quatz....and that is just what makes them tick. When I first started to buy watches, I bought models simply for how they looked but now I want to buy for what they do or offer me. I guess I am concerned about looking at my collection in years to come and discover that they are all the same bar their cosmetic appearance. Don't get me wrong I will still buy watches for how they look but I'd like a bit of direction

So what I want to do now is start buying different styles of watches, for instance my next purchase will be a GMT and then hopefully a watch with power reserve but then what?

The purpose of this thread is to list the different types ( there is probably a better word than that) of watches so please feel free to add what you know to this very short list :) If it makes it easier I will ammend this list as it grows. I know this has the potential to be a big list but that is fine.

    Thanks in advance

    WATCH TYPES / COMPLICATIONS

    1. Hour/Minute/Second
    2. Hour/Minute/Second/Date
    3. Chronograph (2 or 3 Dial)
    4. GMT
    5. Power Reserve
    6. Day/Date

    Additional from other members

    7. Sub Seconds
    8. Center Seconds
    9. Jump Hour
    10. Direct read
    11. Moonphase
    12. 24 Hour
    13. 24 Hour sub dial
    14. Tourbillions
    15. Perpetual calendars
    16. Alarm
    17. Retrograde
    18. Repeaters
    19. Regulateurs
    20. Rattrapante
    21. Single Handed

I guess you could also consider case material/finish

    Re: Types of watches (features/complications)

If were talking just mechanics and not styles (i.e. dress watch, dive watch, sport watch) it gets quite complicated.

There's a lot of different ways of doing lots of different things. There's small or sub seconds, sweep seconds, jump hours, jump hour retrograde, direct read , 2 dial chronos, 3 dial chronos, moonphase, chronos with moonphase, 24 hour, watches with 24 hour subdials, chronos with 24 hr subdials, tourbillions, day/dates, perpetual calendars, and various kinds of retrograde dials to read any of the above. Basically a whole lot more than I can even think of. Plus any combination of any of the above with any kind of case style material etc.

If you want to get into watch functions, that's a whole other can of worms.

Altimeters, Barometers, Compasses, Thermometers, Calculators, MP3s, MP4's, Cameras, Remote Controls, Animated, GPS units, Heart Rate Monitors, Tide graphs, Minute Repeaters, Talking, watches, Musical Alarms, Wind speed meters, Speedometers, Pedometers, Games, Vibrating Alarms. . . I can keep going.

    Re: Types of watches (features/complications)

Thanks so far, I have added some of these to my list. I probably don't need to know case designs as such as it seems almost any complication is available in most case designs if you knwo what I mean...Those functions are cool I hadn't really thought down that road.

    Keep them coming thanks

Ok, looks like you're looking at mechanical complications.

I think you should add repeaters, and regulateurs.

Also, separate jump hour and retrograde.

Retrograde refers to dials or subdials which are fan shaped instead of circular, and jump from the end to the beginning.

Sweep seconds isn't really a type of watch but how smoothly the hand moves. Typically mechanical watches will sweep (more) smoothly (usually moving 4 to 10x per second), while quartz watches move once a sec.

Perhaps center seconds is a better description (i.e. normal second hand) though I have heard people refer to it here as sweep seconds too.

The jump hour retrograde thing was my fault too, I though he wanted all combinations not just individual complications, so I listed that there would be jump hours, jump hour retrogrades, if we just want the greater category of jump hour I suppose direct read could be in there too.

This is my definition for the term "sweep second". It is a normal second hand, as opposed to a subdial.

    Re: Types of watches (features/complications)

So when you say direct read, are you referring to watches with a single hand that points to the time like the model below? Does this also refer to watches that use different disks rotating at different speeds and a line or marker to indicate time?
