This watch is a classic beauty. I am going to receive an ST5, but when I would like to go for this one
It is a pitty you cannot get them more easy
Nice pics Ron. I am fond of the bracelet as well, was going to NATO it but it grew on me, polished links and all.
I still have a few left and if there is enough interest, i could go order more. I need to go an bug the guy to get me some spare bezels anyway
I think i have figured out the shipping on these. The Chinese Post is well, not the best parcel service in the world...

Great job Ron!!! Here is my take;
How are you manage to adjust the length of the bracelet, I am worry the tool that I got will scratch the stainless steel braceletI may better to wait until weekend and bring to a watch shop to adjust it.
Can't wait to put it on my wrist!!!![]()

Alright, rather than starting a new thread on the same topic, I will add to this thread about my recent experiences purchasing from Alfred.
As with many others on this forum, I was overjoyed to discover that we had a contact to purchase the Shanghai Military re-issues directly from source.
In my enthusiasm, I ordered FOUR, one for myself, and three for friends... Alfred was incredible quick at getting back to me, and within a day or so the package was sent from Shanghai.
Sadly, China Post/EMS did not share my enthusiasm, and managed to have the watches shipped back to Alfred by mistake!![]()
This is where things get interesting.
Alfred took it upon himself to visit both UPS and FedEx, who both advised that they were not prepared to ship all four watches in one package.
Perhaps it is some secret initiative on the the part of the Chinese customs to prevent people from exporting a national treasure, but in all instances no one would ship all four watches in one package...
In the end, Alfred shipping TWO packages using FedEx, each consisting of two watches. The was done on an expedited basis, and at his own expense! I had paid for EMS shipping, and clearly two FedEx packages would have been more expensive.
In any event, the first of these packages arrived yesterday, and I am now waiting with anticipation on the second one!
In all, I am genuinely appreciative of Alfred's help in securing these watches, and the extra effort on his part in getting these one! Thank you Alfred!!!
I will take pictures and do a modest review of the re-issue, when I get a chance to compare it against the original in my collection. My cursory inspection of the re-issue is that is is visually very close, but very different in terms of construction, when compared to the original 24-jewel model. I am still not sure if the new bezel would work as a replacement for the original. They both appear to be the size, but it is hard to tell without actually removing the part.
It is also interesting to note that no efforts were made to use a more robust material for the plastic bezels. The construction of the bezel is a friction design, using an unreinforced plastic ring. Given the problems had with the originals, I would have expected SWF to either use a better composite/reinforced graphite material (a la Luminox), or to use a cast aluminum part, painted black (like on some Vostoks I've seen). At least the design is true to the original.
Another thing I've noticed is that the luminescent hour markers are not actually "dishes" with luminescent material in them. Instead, they appear to be flat chrome pieces, with the luminescent material painted on.
The bracelet is nice, but the buckle design is quite different from the original. The new design seems to be influenced by the one found on many current Seiko divers.
I have not yet had an opportunity to open up the case back on mine, but am really curious as to what movement is being used.
All in all, I am very pleased with the purchase, and will undoubtedly spend many hours comparing it against the original version.
On a tangent note, one of the intended-recipients of the four that I bought has changed his mind, so I am left with a spare. If anyone in Canada is interested, I would be happy to pass it on to them at cost. I have paid the customs duties already, so that is one less headache to deal with. If you are in Vancouver, I can even meet up!
Would love to hear other collector's views on the re-issue.

This thread is not only intoxicative but contigious too. I strongly advise new reader to have himself vaccinated for Shanghai flu if he is not already immuned.
I suggest, for the sake of forum community, this thread to be quarantined.![]()

Go GREEN Go with MECHANICAL WATCH!!!
Here the discussion begin ....
- I agree the plastic bezel is very hard to adjust and move.
- I did open the heart of the watch (see pic), not sure what type of movement (I think some members has identified the movement), but the plastic inner ring is something I alway wonder why "plastic" in the new watches (many brands, Sea-Gull, Shanghai and even some Swiss watches ... ). That is why I still appreciate the vintage watches, solid material.
- The crown without the "Signature" ... again older is better sometime.
- I really want to try is this "waterproof", too bad I didn't win the "Second" one
But overall with the current price and it is a great watch!
Cheer!
Go GREEN Go with MECHANICAL WATCH!!!
The crown logo under the balance is Dixmont Guangzhou (DG). Most likely a DG28.
cheers,
gigfy
Yup, I saw that one too... sadly, this seller consistently overprices his watches! He had a ST5D "DongFeng" previously, in good condition, but with a slight printing defect on the dial... and was asking $400 for it!!!! Given that the Sea-Gull equivalent can be readily had for $80 on Ebay, and the two watches were virtually identical, except for the dial markings, it is hard to justify thoes prices...
I think that is similiarlly the case here with the Shanghai Military watch.... nice watch, but I would say at MOST worth a quarter of the asking price.
Incidently, if anyone is interested in this one, the luminescent paint has been re-applied, and wasn't done particularly well either...
