Prototype Shanghai Diver (Quartz) - upgraded version of SS4

Prototype Shanghai Diver made by Shanghai City Watch & Clock Research Centre early 80's. It's an upgrade version of SS4 with an hacking quartz calander movement.

The dial showed "Shiying Dian Zi" = Quartz

The bezel has been modifield from fragile plastic to metal (look like copper) and carries an SS4 alike unmarked screw-down crown.

Typical SH watch case-back shape with very unusal engraving.
First role: Quartz Calandar Diving S-Steel Anti-magnetic
    Central: Prototype
Below: Shanghai City Watch & Clock Reserach Centre

Very nice! I'm glad to see they upgraded the bezel. I wonder if it would fit the original SS4?

    Cheers,

    Fantastic piece of history.

Do you have a photo of the movement? What are the specifications? I read somewhere that this watch used a 8192Hz occilator, rather than the 32768 of most quartz.

Who is the Shanghai City Watch & Clock Reserach Centre?

Thanks for all the supporting. Being lazy for so long, I will post and update my bolg more frequently from now on

Hi gigfy, not sure if the bezel can fit into the SS4, but will try and let you know the result.

Hi Chascomm. I think it's just used the normal 32768hz occilator. I have a later Baoshihua quartz watch which carried the same Cal.-DSE mov't.
I have found there are a lot of Watch & Clock Reserach Centre in every city of China. The one in Shanghai is still existing and they are doing the research and testing on everything related to horological industry. I think it could be a sub-branch of Light Industry Bureau China in early 70's.

    The photo of the mov't...

Thanks, Joel. As I understand it the Shanghai Number 2 Watch Factory introduced the DSE in 1983. Was this military watch released earlier than the civilian Baoshihua quartz watches?

I have checked through the Shanghai Light-Industry Bureau web-page again, but there is no record about the role of "SH W&C Research Centre' on the development of quartz movement . May be it just a prototype of diving watch or army used watch? Quit sure that it has never been launched to market.
