I find that ales and bitters have a more complex and intersting flavour (well, more flavour too) than the "Pilsner" (=lager) type.
Can you get Ales (made in the USA) in the US?

Getmilk! I lived in East Sussex for 10 years. fairly close to Lewes/Harvey's brewery.

I remember that Lone Star in Texas was very drinkable.

Take a look at my favorite brewery in the States, they've got a nice selection, I'm sure you'd find their "Liberty Ale" to your liking.

    Re: American beer!

    Thanks for that!
It seems to be a high quality brewery. Unfortunately no importation to Grand Cayman. I will speak to a local importer if they might want to import some.

I have to mention one thing I love. The twist off cap! The best US invention so far.
Should be used by all breweries worldwide.
(The worst one is the Plastic bottle,I think Miller Light uses it)

You and I usually see eye to eye on things, but people who say they like Guiness are either lying, or serious damage has occured to their taste buds.

Guiness is the worst garbage I have ever drank. I would rather drink waste water treatment plant influent then touch my lips to another glass that contains Guiness.

Im not a beer coniseur or anything and I'm Sorry, Guiness is just awful.

Steamwhistle is a great beer, Ive always liked a really cold Kokanee.

    Regards,

we drink out of pints here not half measures or bottles

if you can get them over there try guiness draught or stella artois and youll see whos who after 10 pints of that

failing that get a drink called barley wine which isnt actually a wine but a craftily named beer that comes in about 150ml bottles and is about 15%ish alcohol content be warned!

you americans and your lame beers dont know how to drink, us uk wuseekers would bury you guys in a drinking contest any day of the week, budweiser is quite ok though but i have to drink about 30 bottles to get a small buzz on

canadians make better beer than you too! Coors light is beautyfull

i will give you this though and am contradicting myself entirely here

miller light is the best larger i have ever ever drank and is my all favorite i absolutely adore it

but even that was derived from an ancient mexican recipe

just my opinion i hope i have not upset any of you american folks here just a bit of fun thats all

There are too many good American microbrews out there to name just one. I like Shiner Bock for a everyday beer. The Abita line of beer brewed here in Louisiana is good. Abita Purple Haze, and Turbo Dog are my favs. Those that think American beer is weak, try a Dixie Blackened Voodoo Lager ... it'll put hair on your ass.

Oh, another thing. We dont drink pints because like 90% of the earth we like our beer cold, not like that warm stale toliet water you call Guiness. And we will see whos who when you finish off a 60 pounder of Crown Royal.

I think you and I are going to have to agree to disagree on the Guinness issue. There is nothing, nothing better than a Guinness, especially on tap, at a favorite neighborhood pub in the middle of winter.

That said, there are also better beers out there.

    Re: American beer!

America's Oldest Brewery, Yuengling Been drinking that since, well, let's say I was old enough to drink Favorite is the Porter, and now that it is the fall season, it's time for something dark!

Another favorite from college days is Ballantine's Ale. I haven't seen it in a long time though. Probably the most unique tasting American brew I ever had.

I loved Abita the few times I had it, but it isn't easy to find here in the Northeast. Anchor Steam is pretty darn good too.

Alright, this thread needs a drool icon, darn you guys

    Cheers,
    Griff

    Re: American beer!

You guys have mentioned lots of (unknown for us non-US guys) small quality breweries.
We are aware of the big ones, the ones that churn out the way-below-world-average stuff.
I promise you guys, the next time I step (if I am alowed ) on US soil, I will do my best to drink as many of those beers as possible.

It is a common misconception that the British/Irish beers/ales/bitters are drunk lukewarm. I thought the same before I moved to the UK.
They are drunk at Cellar temperature, as the barrels are usually kept in a cellar under the Public House.
Beer should never be enjoyed ice cold. The taste is pretty close to zero if too cold.
The last decade or so, it has become a fashion to serve beer at temperatures close to freezing. Totally wrong.
Not only you miss the taste, also it is not good for your stomach.

One central European custom I have never encountered anywhere else (and received some strange looks for) is to order 2 beers the first time you order.
The first one you drink quickly to get rid of the thirst, the next one (and all the others) are drunk for the taste.

Another crazy development is the hunt for high %.
When I visited Budweis (Ceske Budejovice) in Czech republic last year, the Budweiser brewery had just developed a new beer, called "Pardal"
(The original stuff is called Budvar).
Pardal was developed together with more than 300 beerdrinkers, selected from pubs across southern Czech republic.
    The endproduct has 3.8% alcohol.
The reason? The drinkers wanted a beer you could drink lots of, witout getting to intoxicated.

    KillerKowalzyk!
A pint is a measure, has nothing to do with the Temperature. As for your comment about Guiness, well, it is best you stick to Michelob Ultra! Straight from the Freezer, of course!
