I'm from Toronto. Love it, and have my entire life.
I actually live outside of the city now, because of the cost of living - I can afford to live in Toronto, but if I don't, I litterally have scads more disposable income. My sister and I bought our first homes at almost the same time. They were both over 80 years old, and were both within about 150 - 200 SF of one another, in many ways the same house. That is where the similarities ended. Hers was in east Toronto, mine was a half hour out of the city. Her lot was about 45/100, mine was 60/220. Her was more than a half million, mine was less than half that. Her property taxes were almost triple mine. She also had to pay to park in front off her house. I had a 4-car driveway and limitless parking on the street.
Stuff like that adds up quite a bit. I'd love it if the cost of living were lower in the city, but then that comes with it's own demons. You can't have your cake and eat it too, so I don't dwell on it, I live around it; even with everything that could be improved, I would never hate on T.O.
Raised and live in Amsterdam and enjoy every day. The only downside is the weather... Too much rain and most of the time it's pretty cold. In the spring and summer it is great. Maybe I should think of living part time in Amsterdam and move to a warmer country in the winter ;)

Some people seem to either:
a) take this all personally, like it's a personal affront that some don't like a certain town.
b) dislike the idea of people not liking things, and are trying to shift the thread to a love fest of "yay, everywhere is beautiful and the world is a wonderful place everywhere and all the time."
Seriously, I'm not asking to be converted. Peterborough stinks. That's my opinion. That is that. Calgary sucks for many people. I used to be one. Now I like it. If I were trapped in Peterborough long enough, hey, I might start to like it. Probably not.
Again, the point of the thread is to rag on the foibles of where you live. No one is asking to be be converted.
(as an aside, just about every prof I've met can't stand the place. Most live outside of town in places like Lakefield. Some are actively looking for new jobs for the simple fact that they cannot stand Peterborough. Two, with whom I had dinner a few weeks ago, do not come into town ever. We had dinner a few weeks ago, and that was the first time they had come into town in months. Many of my students, several of whom are from the town, do not like it here.)

I got lost in Detroit once, back in 1993. It was a bit tense. There were sofas on the road, people walking around with baseball bats in a non-friendly manner. Fires in gargabe cans. The gas station we stopped at had bullet-proof glass between the cashier and the public. That was the first time I had ever seen that.

My wife wants to go to Amsterdam. I wouldn't mind either. We'd like to bring our Dutch bikes (English Pashley bikes, actually) and ride around.

Nobody needs convert you. From the sound of things you'll be away in six weeks and never need to return.Again, the point of the thread is to rag on the foibles of where you live. No one is asking to be be converted.
Personally I feel sorry for anyone who has to live somewhere they hate just so they can make a living. But living in Peterborough is not like living in Baghdad, no matter how you feel about it personally.
I am done here. No point in ragging on any more foibles.
