I ride a motorcycle but I can testify that most of the speed bike accidents are because of the dummies ridding them. I'm thrilled they caught this guy. I hope he never gets his license again and they should do something to his Mom as well. This kind of crap is putting peoples lives at risk!

We had a young mother killed on the very busy highway where my office is located a few years ago by a kid drag-racing. When he lost control, the front seat of her SUV is where part of his car ended up. He was killed to, of course. Very bad for his family.

The other side of the equation includes the crazy soccer moms who do not pay much attention to the road.

A few years ago, I was riding my motorcycle in winter and stopped and moved forward at a four way stop. A soccer mom on the phone and driving an SUV paid no heed and kept speeding (through a residential neighborhood) and hit me straight on. Fortunately, I hit my head and fell on a snow bank. I had a concussion, one cracked rib, and a few other smaller injuries. And this woman did not stop even for a second to see if I was alright. If it were not for someone else who came by and saw the wreck, things would have been different.

Similarly, even in a bike-friendly city like Boston, I see people paying no heed to motorcycles and bicycles. At least I am glad that this city isn't fully populated by oversized SUVs, unlike, say, Dallas.

My point? For every crazy kid drag racing or doing insane speeds, there are hundreds of idiot car drivers out there who are much more dangerous on the road with their complacency.

Yup, that's how it goes. Don't get me wrong, there have been just about as many accidents where it was the driver of the car that was at fault. But more often than not, you see these 20 something kids flying down the road on their crotch rockets at stupid speeds. I was talking about this stupidity with a co-worker of mine yesterday and I remembered a situation that happened quite a few years ago when I was heading to the office. It was a beautiful summer day, I had my windows down sitting at a red light that was about to go green. The light went green and I was 1/2 way through the intersection when a kid went flying by the traffic driving in between the cars going at least double the speed limit. The sound of the bike going by my drivers side window almost gave me a heart attack. I had no idea what was going on until I saw him fly up the road. No so smart.

We just had a woman turn left in front of a very experienced bike rider last year that killed him instantly. There have been many others but that one just popped in my head.

I used to deal with this one store for all of my bike needs, I asked the guy I used to deal with about the crotch rockets and the rates of accidents with those bikes as opposed to cruisers. He said the stats are way higher because it's younger divers on bikes with way more power than they can handle thinking that they are invincible. He added that it's Gods way of thinning out the stupid people.

Re: This kid is an idiot, I've gone fast on a bike

I have been riding for 45 years, I ride 20 miles each way to work 75 % of the time. Ridden across the country and have had my share of incidents, been down a couple of times and yes done some crazy stuff, but nothing ever on this scale, especially with other people and cars around.
Being a biker I tend to side with bikers more often, the worst wreck I ever had, I was sitting at a red traffic light on a full dresser with about a dozen tail lights and some idiot ran me over...said he couldn't see me, the @#$#@!^&...Yea right.
But, all that said when I see stuff like this done in public and hear folks say its cool, it really worries me???

Re: This kid is an idiot, I've gone fast on a bike

My son recently turned 17, and he has started practicing driving ( a car).
In the first couple of sessions, I had a feeling that he did not have any respect or understanding of the dangers of speed.

So I did ( empty private road) a couple of quick turns that got the car in a rear end slide. A couple of emergency braking, where the ABS kicked in, and sharp turns while braking ( Front end slide).

I did maybe max 20 MPH.

His reaction was: Wow, it is not as they show on XXX game ( forget which one) .

Now, he drives carefully and slowly.

Question: What the young Idiot did, in some countries it is a Civil Offense, not a Criminal Offence. Civil Offences have a different punishment level.

How is the classification in US and Canada? Civil? Criminal?

If you were doing 100, you'd be singing a different tune today, or no tune at all. I think that is the main point.
It doesn't really matter if you drive a bike, SUV or skate board. You should pay attention and be aware that there's more people on the road. And be prepared for anything! In your case it was someone that not only hit you, but ran away after the crash, she should have gone to jail over that. Over here it's a criminal offense to run away from the scene of an accident.

In a situation like this one, the driver would end up with a criminal charge. Stunting, driving with reckless
abandon and of course speeding. I'm sure there would be a pile of other charges laid against the driver, the city cops want this kid nailed and I'm sure the rest of normal thinking individuals feel the same way. Jail time and a lifetime ban from driving would be my preference.

Sometimes our Legal system is not made for some offences.
Speeding, even extreme one, is not a Criminal offence in Sweden, unless they have changed the laws. He would maybe lose the bike ( not sure, as it did not legally belong to him ) he would face a hefty fine, loss of his drivers license for a lengty time.
If he killed somebody, even indirectly like the other person weered off the road and hit a tree, would make it a Criminal Offence.

Check out on Youtube " porsche 993 vs Ferrari" and you will find 2 idiots comprting on a public road in a Scandinavian country ( possibly Norway). I break out in sweat every time I have watched. Showed my son how not to drive, pointed out all the lethal stuff they did.

Well, you won't believe this. They know they have seized the right bike but the driver will not be charged. All they have is a pair of hands in the video is what the spokesman said on the news just now. The registered owner is responsible for the charges (his mother in this case) and she was given a $1500.00 fine. The idiot that we all know was driving the bike has over 25 previous driving charges including speeding, driving without insurance and without a licence. This sucks, I wish they could somehow prove that it was him so they could lock him up.
