Do you actually like the look of a cyclops?

I understand the reasoning behind having a cyclops (magnifying window) above the date window - to allow the user to see the small date more easily.

However, I have two problems with them:
    1) the date becomes almost impossible to read unless you look at it dead-straight-on; and
    2) it is a massive visual distraction to the overall look of the front of the watch.

(Perhaps watch makers are thinking they need to follow the Rolex Sub lead...?)

Whenever I see before/after shots of a watch that has been "de-cyclopsed" my immediate feeling is "Ahh, that's better."

What are your thoughts? Am I alone on this one?

No, you're not alone. I don't like the look of a cyclops at all. I've seen a few nice watches that were ruined by the cyclops. But this is all very subjective.

i agree with you its an ugly feature and i don't know why its so popular, do watch manufacturers think we have poor eyesight?

FWIW you are not alone, don't like them at all and don't like the date feature either.

I don't care for them. However, I don't mind the one on my VSA Dive Master. It's inset into the actual date window, instead of on the outside of the crystal.

Re: Do you actually like the look of a cyclops?

I can take or leave a cyclops - deciding factor is if it has enough magnification. The cyclops on my Marathon SAR looks great (2.5x magnification) whereas the cyclops on Steinharts don't do much for me because of the weak magnification. I wish my Citizen Promaster Tough had one as the date is tiny. Also, I tend to favour watches with a date feature, in contrast to Vokotin! To each his own, I guess. PS I like the original look for my watches, so went out of my way to locate and buy the SAR with the cyclops. I'd probably do the same if I were ever to buy a Steinhart model with the cyclops despite the shortcomings of Steinhart's cyclops. I'd be more likely to upgrade the cyclops to a correct 2.5x magnification version from Ofrei.

Like #aurora, I'm not usually attracted to watches with a cyclops. However, my Muhle has one integrated into the crystal and I think it works very well. Besides, my aging eyes appreciate it even more.
