    Glycine S.O.S 500m Super Compressor

    or maybe not.
I decided to buy it despite some obvious ? marks...

The black case detail can be turned to protect the crown.

The back with compressor markings AND non screwed!? remember, 500m waterproof...

    When backlid is snapped of...

    The ETA 2783 is visible

A few closeups of the dial...

Of course the backlid will not snap back now, I´l have to try some sort of steady pressure. The problem is a steel spring which i guess is used for hooking on one of the backlid "rims"...

Thanks for the scroll and have a great weekend!

Holy cow! That's the coolest dive watch I've seen on here in a long time. Thanks for the great pics.

How did they get 500 m WR with a snap-on caseback???

That's a very nice one. How old is it? It seems to be from the 70ies, right?

Thanks guys, a snap on case can NEVER be waterproof to 500m?
But if this is a frankenwatch, it´s pretty well made. The structure of the lid is very solid and I´ve never seen one with these types of "grooves" before. Who would put that much energy in building an old glycine diver? And whats up with the S.O.S?

I´d guess somewhere around the 70´s, the ETA caliber was available back then.

Looks like the Glycine Incursore "Arco" inherited a lot from your watch

    Very nice!

I like it! I have a Glycine Airman and Stratoforte and in my Opinion the Glycine are very underrated Timepieces. Awesome Diver you have there! Cheers!

    Snogge, another great find!
What makes you so sure it's a Franken? From what I have seen most of the true divers used srew down "super compressor" cases but not all, e g the JLC Polaris which used a snap on "compressor" case. Could there not be others?

Skane, I'm not certain, and you're right about the polaris! The Deep Sea Alarm diver was a snapon too and with 300m w.rating. Never had them in mind.

I need to find more info on this model!

Re: Glycine S.O.S 500m Super Compressor

It is a compressor style case - not a snap on. It probably uses bayonet style lugs to twist the case back on only a certain amount (like a telescopic camera lens). The spring provides back pressure to the case back so you don't over tighten it. The idea behind the "compressor" design is to let water pressure compress the case back onto the seal - the deeper you go, the tighter the seal becomes. It is very much likely to survive 500 meters, if not more. The Rolex "ring lock" is a similar design and very capable.

Look up "super compressor" and you'll find the original patent along with some good diagrams. It is really a cool design IMHO.

Thanks Ryeguy! I don't know where I got "super" from, this is obviously a compressor case, lacking brevet nbrs though. I still think the backlid is a snap on since most bayonet styled cases have "ridges" to aline with the case. This lid is plain and non screwable.

Very nice Snogge, I really like this one! It never ceases to amaze me what interesting divers show up in Scandinavia.

I think a lot of WR ratings in the early 70s were a bit...enthusiastic.

As an aside, some compressor-cased watches omitted the brevet numbers or the hard hat logo. I believe that only one or the other was required.

Neat watch with great pics, thanks for sharing. There was so much more interesting variation in watches before the quartz onslaught.
