Lots of good advice in this thread. Theyr are both great watches (so is the Ray). I have said before that the best mechanical watch $100 can buy is the Orient Mako.
But if I had $200, I would get a Monster.
So I ended up with one of each.

The only watch I have ever opened up is a 5 dollar watch. I did fix it though (Quartz, had a bad connection). However, I do not feel mechanically inclined with watches enough at this point to open up anything with a value of over 15 dollars... Which may happen. I will probably take apart my 15 dollar Chinese mechanical sometime to try to get a feel for watches. I wouldn't mind owning a Seiko Monster, however nothing about the SKX007 really appeals to me, at all. Well, that's just my taste. If I got a Monster though, I may get an OM just because of how out there the design is. I can't really see using the BM in any situation over the Orient Ray, but an OM... Hm... probably in a few.![]()
+1 Especially seeing as the majority of people who wrote a review claimed that they were able to achieve the sub 5 second range, one person even claimed that he hadn't reset his watch in 18 MONTHS (mako) since he got it. Can he prove that? No. Is it probably true? Maybe, but his watch is probably a minute or two off at least in honesty. Is it a hyperbole? Most likely, but he sure felt the need to write a testament about the watch.

This was my first post on WUS, so I'm going to put a little update on here. I've had the watch for about 7 months. I have to say, the watch itself still keeps great time. However, the bracelet was mauled from my job after a few months. It's now on a Seiko rubber strap. That being said, I don't think I would have chosen this watch again over the Black Monster. I probably should have gone with it to begin with. You can find OEM replacements for the monster, not so much for the Ray. I don't really care for the looks of it anymore. Still a good watch, though.
I love my Black Mako, but I also think the Seiko is ugly which has prevented me from buying one. There's my opinion. :P
The Kid.
(ok, so I'm not that young but try to live like I am...)
I'm quite pleased with my blue Ray. Still enjoy its great dial. The bracelet can be replaced - with something different or better.
I talked one of my co-workers that has a much less demanding job for a watch into buying a Orient Blue Ray. He loves the watch, and the bracelet does just fine for what he needs it to. I came to my senses and bought a G-Shock for work, and you can most certainly tell that it has been well worn. More than likely, the dumb part was me taking the watch to work in the first place. I do feel, though, that the Monster would have held up better.
