    My First Seiko............

So, after always being a Citizen man I desided it was time to get myself a Seiko. And being as all my watches are divers it had to be a Seiko Dive watch. So & read a bit. I looked at some pictures. I desided on a Model. I desided to get a 6309. Had to really. Looked on Ebay, found a seller, checked him out best one can on a few forums & thought "What the heck, take a punt!" Heres the result. Sorry about the photos, I was restricted to holding a compact camera in one hand with a +3 close-up filter being freeheld over the lens with the other!!! Well thought I'd have a quick go, hope shows it well enough for you guys............

Right, low points that I know of (in my VERY limited knowlage!) Aftermarket Dial, Hands & Bezel insert. (On the plus side, they are new(ish) quite happy to keep it this way till i deside if I wish to put it back to original.

The caseback is pretty worn, but hay it was born in the 80's so I can live with that.

    Now, good points (I hope!)
It's been servised & running well. Only got here this morning but I set the hands to the BBC clock & its bang-on a mere six hours later.Every gasket on this puppy has been replaced & it was tested to 50 meters for 10 hours. Just grabed a quick 45 mins in the pool to only 6 meters, didn't miss a beat (Though my heart did when I jumped in with it on my wrist!!) Not a very scientific test I admit but I've seen a couple of watches fail it . I'm off diving in Cyprus & some of the dives will be in the 40-45 meter range for up to 20 mins. Seller told me he was happy & conferdent this would be fine. And could send it back if not.We will see, will take it for a slightly more taxing 20 meter sea dive at the weekend.

Got to say, loved the look of the watch in photos, but OMG, in the flesh this watch is stunning. I LOVE this thing!!

So, couple things I could do with help with.
    1) whats the exact model? 6309-7049 I think? 2) Embarressed to say it, but how do I set the day & date? Sure one of you will take pity on a Seiko newbie & help out. A link to an "Idiots gude to the 6309" would be great.
Came on a Repo-style Z22 resin strap. Will do for now but hunting for a mesh to give it the pucka Vintage-diver look.
Any comments/infomation you guys could give would be appreciated. I must admit to being one happy diver & sooooo chuffed to be in the 6309 club!

    Re: My First Seiko............

Congrats on a NICE watch. I recently sold mine, and I really regret doing so. As for your questions, here goes:

    1. Based on the caseback, it looks to be a 6309-7049.
    2. First off, never set the day or date when the time is between 9pm and 4am. This can really damage the movement. What I do is: unscrew the crown, pull it out 2 clicks (furthest position), then set the time at 6:00. It doesn't matter if it's am or pm. Then, push the crown all the way back in, then pull it out 1 click to the first position. This is the position it needs to be in to set the day and date. Turn the crown clockwise, and this will move the date. Set the date to the previous day (ie. today is the 31st...set it to 30). Then, turn the crown counter-clockwise, and this will move the day. Set the day to the previous day. After you've set the day and date to the previous day, pull the crown back out to the furthest position, then start turning it counter clockwise to set the time. Keep moving the hands until you see the day and date switch over to today's day and date, then set the time accordingly.

    Congrats.

If the caseback is original, going from the serial #, it looks like your watch was produced in May, 1985.

The 6309-7040 and 6309-7049 are essentially identical except that the 7040 was produced for the Japanese domestic market and the 7049 was produced for export.

For your first one, excellent choice

Most definitely an excellent choice!! Congrats! I enjoyed mine very much. It is truly a classic diver. Mine was also aftermarket and looked brand new and I loved it. Enjoy yours.
