One day, after you've basically given up the search, you'll just randomly check out the Marathon section on WatchRecon and see that GSAR that eluded you all this time. Seems to be the way it goes sometimes, haha. Good luck, and remember, if it's something you really want, the desire will still be there when that deal does show up. Good luck.

I'm in the same situation. Started looking at used TSAR's a couple months ago when there were multiple examples below $350. Now when the time comes to buy one they all seem to be high $300's/$400.

Marathon makes a great watch. I bought a preowned one a couple months ago, but unfortunately it arrived with a stripped crown.
As far as servicing is concerned, most recommend servicing every 5 years. Of course if its keeping good time, you might not be persuaded into a service, but it should at least be pressure tested to make sure a wash in the shower or a swim in the ocean won't ruin it. Jack and Jay both do terrific work, but be advised that the wait time for a watch service is usually around 2-4 months. I think that if you use watchrecon and check frequently you can probably find a GSAR for around 500-$600 easy..just be patient. While I do like some Luminox's (contrary to most on WUS), I do think the GSAR is leap years ahead in terms of overall quality and value.

Be patient. They do still occasionally come up at good prices, but they go pretty quick.

+1 on Jack at IWW and I'll put in a good word here for James at Midwest Watch & Clock as well (he has a page on facebook, plus his site at Midwest Watch & Clock | The Midwest's Pocket Watch Specialists! | Worldwide ). I've read some horror stories about people ruining cases by attempting to remove the bezels, but James is a true watch doctor and does fantastic work on SARs and more.

Jim Madrid is the man on marathons. Be patient, put a WTB ad on multiple forums, and you will will get one.
Louis Winthorpe III: This is a Rouchefoucauld. The thinnest water-resistant watch in the world. Singularly unique, sculptured in design, hand-crafted in Switzerland, and water resistant to three atmospheres. This is *the* sports watch of the '80s. Six thousand, nine hundred and fifty five dollars retail!
    Pawnbroker: You got a receipt?
Louis Winthorpe III: Look, it tells time simultaneously in Monte Carlo, Beverly Hills, London, Paris, Rome, and Gstaad.
Pawnbroker: In Philadelphia, it's worth 50 bucks.
Louis Winthorpe III: Just give me the money.

Sounds like supply and demand not greed. I think Topspec is the only AD now and they are charging more for new models which is probably driving up the cost of used models as well.
