    Tired of flipping

I am tired of flipping watches. Every now and then, I buy a watch 'sight unseen' and then gt it and decide that it is not perfect. I currently have a nice collection, but I have two watches that are in my office, not yet brought home. One of them (a May 2006 Marathon SAR) will probably make it home. The other (a seiko kenetic GMT is destined to be flipped. But, I do not feel like going through the effort of posting it. I know I will do so soon...

I have vowed to only buy watches that are 'special' for some reason. I currently have 11 watches in my 10 watch case....Most of them are special to me. Even my least watch: a Traser H3 Auto has a role: it is the night watch cause it glows all night.

My 6 bathys...well they are just fun. I love the brand, and I am hapy to support a US company that makes moderately priced (IMHO) watches that do not look like Subs.

Every watch in my collection makes me happy to wear it....I have developed an emotional attachment to all of them.

So what am I going to do? Well, I am only going to buy special pieces...like the 46 mm Bathys ti diver, and one other TBD bathys....

But no more cheap watches just to check them out....And any watch over 1K must call out to me....must be something special.

In 2007, all but one of my watches were purchased (note that I had more watches Jan 1 2007 that I today). i bought and sold a lot of watches...too many to count...mostly in the the first few months.

So, for 2008, I want to sell one (the formentioned seiko), and buy two or three....and get a bigger watch box.
Timing is everything..... Today I have: MIH, IWC Aquatimer Chrono, Pam 111, Bathys Black/Black Benthic, Bathys Aquaculture Rose Gold,Bathys Ti CarbonF, Bathys UV Quartz, Bathys Black Qtz, Bathys Orange Benthic, Sinn 757 S UTC, Sinn 900 Fleiger.
Waiting on: White Dial, Black PVD Sinn U1.

    Re: Tired of flipping

dhs- I think flipping watches is a phenomenon bred from the practice of purchasing on the internet rather than the in-person route. It used to be, and still is for some, that you saw a watch you liked at a store- you tried it on, play with it, whatever- and then either bought it or priced it out elsewhere, etc.

But these days, people get watches at the drop of a hat, without even seeing them beforehand. Next thing you know the watch is in their hands, and it doesn't "sing" to them- it gets the flip.

I'm not saying that's bad, it simply is how things are.

Sounds like you have a plan.

    Re: Tired of flipping

That is most probably true....usually the flipped watches come from buying something used of off a sales forum....based only on the pic. When I put it on, something is not right...be it the razer sharp lugs that feel like they are just waiting to slice into me or the extremely sparkly dial. Buying new has the same risks. However, most new watches are returnable if unworn...however, I have never returned one.

    It doesn't help ...

that a lot of you guys post such incredible pics. It's hard to not find some of these watches very appealing based on the quality pics. Sadly, when you get them they just don't sing like the pics did. Been there, done that. I'm with you this year. I'm only buying watches that are true keepers. I'm going for quality not quantity in 08. - David

    Re: Tired of flipping

    You guys are funny.

You want to stop flipping now but in a couple of months.....

I have been through exactly the same emotions. I think as long as we are looking at watches on forums we will be flipping!

It is the nature of our minds to always want something new, something we have not seen in person, something that will be different and fullfill that desire for ........

So I understand and agree with what you are saying but I have stopped trying to fight the flipping habit. I only have two watches now and they are "keepers" for me but in the end, several months from now when I see some new design I really like or some "incredible" deal I will probably be flipping again!

It is the nature of watch collectors unless you are like some of our more fortunate watch collectors here who seem to get a new "grail" watch every other day. You know who you are! Most of us simply can't afford to buy a new $1000 watch let alone multiple $1000 watches so the only way to get new temptation is to flip.

I also agree it is a phenomenon of internet watch buying. Some watches you can't even look at before you buy, they are direct sales only. So what is a watch nut to do???

Don't worry about it. Enjoy what you have until it is time to flip it!

    Re: Tired of flipping

boy, this thread strikes a chord. I think all of you are correct, flipping is part of the WIS experience. It's easy to be seduced by the latest bling, and one day you wake up and there's 20 or 30 watches sitting there and you don't wear any of them.

Not that it's happened to me, lol.

    Re: Tired of flipping

A few years ago I made the decision that I wanted my collection to take a different direction. I decided that I wanted to have more high end watches and watches that are rare and hard to find. I am 75% there.

I hear you man! I may trade some, but only if the new ones fit into my idea of the collection. Lately it has been german watches, and slowly I am getting to a happy medium.

    Re: Tired of flipping

i kept flipping watches because i wanted a SeaDweller and just couldn't justify the cost. so i was looking for another grail watch.

guess what there is only one grail, so i ended up by the SeaDweller anyway. so over time i have unloaded the other watches. though now i am really toying with the idea of a paneri sub.
