Better Than Quartz?

I was wondering if there is anything better on the drawing boards – that would fit on my wrist. I have no interest in or intent to make or design a watch but it bothers me that my cheesy $100 Casio can be off by <= 2.5 seconds per day (depending on when it was last synched with Boulder). And yes, dynamically computed thermal corrected quartz would be nice but would still be an ad hoc fix for the problems of quartz oscillators.

Is your Casio a quartz? If so, 2.5 SPD is absolutely terrible, especially if it is RC as your post suggests. Modern (and even vintage) thermocompensated quartz can achieve accuracy of +/- 5 SPY. Are you looking for better accuracy than this?

Oh dear me, that should have been 1.5 seconds. Very sorry. And that was inferred from the .5 SPD possible variance in the oscillator, “ Accuracy: +/-15 seconds per month (with no signal calibration) “ and a figure of one second maximum variation as an offset from the synch source introduced by the processor. This last I believe I read on the Casio US site, but a search for that done just now was not successful in confirming this. So possibly another “Oh dear me” is due. And in which case; it bothers me that my cheesy $100 Casio can be off by half a darn SPD.

I guess it's a personal thing (you can leave now), generations ago I had a piece of test equipment that used a quartz oscillator as a reference source. The crystal was housed in a sealed glass tube with metalpins for its plug like the 12AX7s that glowed around it. The crystal's glass envelope included a heating element and a bimetal thermostat and one had to wait at least 30 minutes for it to “stabilize”/(get within the thermostat's hysteresis). So when using quartz based instruments I am sometimes miffed by the fact that I still haven’t lived long enough to see the quartz oscillatorsuperseded by something better.

Thanks, I didn't know that. Umm, possibly because I've only looked at cheaper watches? Suggestions would be welcome, I'm willing to look an expensive watch or two, but that often ends up feeling like a uniquely unpleasant form of self-abuse :)

Check out the Bulova Precisionist line of watches. Probably not as accurate (or expensive) as a TC watch, but more accurate than a typical quartz.

I am not sure of accuracy rate but I think in concept the Kinitic movement is the best technology for the money. You get the best of both world, I just got first one just few weeks ago and it is amazing.

In a way you also get the worst of both worlds. Why add more moving parts to a quartz? I think solar will stitch up that side of the market.
