flyinghell34, rfortson and ras47 like this.
" Two mighty torches of flame like the wings of a yellow bird of fire flew over a field, covered a field with a brilliant yellow bloomings of flame, and in the midst of it, white as a ghost, white as the white of Melville's Moby Dick, white as the shrine of the Madonna in half the churches of the world, this slim angelic mysterious ship of stages rose without sound out of its incarnantion of flame and began to ascend slowly into the sky, slow as Melville's Leviathan might swim, slowly as we might swim upward in a dream looking for the air............."

"EMU watch" from NASA's flight crew equipment manual

At the May 24th Omega Event, a rep said that even today Speedmasters are required as a backup device for any NASA eva work. In a ship or structure, astronauts are free to wear whatever they like, or not wear a watch at all. But going outside in space still requires a Speedmaster.

I researched this question a few weeks ago and had to go straight to the source to get the answer. This is not correct and I would be skeptical of what the Omega Representative claims.

Who would you trust to get the correct answer from, the Omega sales representative or the guy that did two EVA's during his Expedition 40/41 mission?

I trust the guy that did the 2 EVA's and his answer was....

"US no longer wears them outside. The Russians still do. I wore it on my Sokol suit for ascent and entry."

That sounds pretty definitive. I highly doubt the Omega rep has done any EVA missions. We stand corrected.
