    Hello Okeah,

Thank you for a concise and informative post. As usual.

And, for taking the time to dismount the dial, never an easy, worry free task.

I think the watch is a lovely original 17j Shturmanskie, with beautiful patina.

I should have made more of the radium burn on 17j dials,as another clue to originality, they seem to have a propensity for it.
Definitely affects the 17j dial more than the 15j, because of the different materials in the dial make up.[although annoyingly not all are affected]

    Near impossible to fake though.

    Very Best Regards,
    Russ

Looks like mine is flat, flat, with edge painted but not minute marks.

    Re: Shturmanskie Gagarin.

Comrades, I missed all the fun while at a dinner party! Many thanks to Comrades slls , mroatman, schnurrp and Russ Cook! We have a lot to digest. The story is not a simple one.

Comrade slls, you are very brave and honest. Do you see evidence of grinding or just lack of paint on the edge?

Comrade mroatman, what do you mean by no paint but not bare metal anyway? It looks like a primer layer before the paint. Is your dial sparkly?

Comrade schnurrp, your edge looks good. is it slightly chamfered?

And then we have my edge with the lines...

    Four dials, four edge variations...

Comrade mroatman what about your two 17j ones (I know nobody wants to open another radium watch so please feel free to ignore)

Of course in principle we should all have measured dial diameter with a vernier...

I am tipsy so I will bid you all good night and as Yuri himself said,

    поехали!

Apologies, I meant that my dial is not painted with minute marks. I've edited my post. Yes, the surface of my dial appears sparkly, though the shine is muted to some degree by age. Still, I'd say sparkly 100%.

All other Sturmanskies are in Texas :(

Given the photos so far, I'd say the edge of my dial looks exactly like schnurrp's.

    Hi all,

I just found some time to inspect my Sturmanskie.
Here they are - 4 Type 1, all with chamfered edges:

And two Type 2, both with flat edges.
One minute hand is longer above the minute ring:

    the other is shorter:

I believe all my watches have original dials.

    Regards, Miro.

I say grinding although not easy to see. So I assume an original 17j except the dial which is original from a 15j.

    Excellent lineup, Miro!

The only thing that looks out of place to me is the 17-jewel hour hand that doesn't reach the minute track. I'm guessing this hand is from a Sportivnie and painted black? In the photo, you can see the hour hand is very clearly shiny/blued, and the minute hand looks flat/black.

Thanks for sharing the details of your beautiful collection.

    Re: Shturmanskie Gagarin.

Thanks to the knowledge and experience of Comrade Russ Cook who identified the dial issue, and the efforts of Comrades slls, mroatman, schnurrp and miroman, we now have new information on the form of Shturmanskie dials, and the differences between 15j and 17j dials. It would seem that normally, edges of both 15j and 17j dials are painted white; 15j dials are slightly curved downwards near the outer edge, while 17j dials are flat. Also, sparkly dials belong to 15j, while 17j dials are flat-painted. Please correct me if I am wrong.

But who painted minute marks on my dial's edge?

    -------------------------

    Beautiful collection Comrade Miroman!

All Comrades who exposed their dials are brave contributors to Soviet Horology, to be rewarded with a NOS 17j Shturmanskie*

Well, you remark immediately make me look at the photos of the other 17j, with longer hand.
Strangely, the hands there are colored the same way - hours is shiny, while minutes is mat and a little darker.
But the minute is longer, and the lume seems original, so scarcely it's painted...
Maybe (as usual with Russian watches) it's some deviation of the quality control.
In BG we have a joke about the quality of the Soviet stuffs: "it's made at Friday afternoon", because the rumors (or not) that the workers begin to drink from the Friday noon (till the Sunday evening). So at the afternoon the quality doesn't matter - everything 'passes' the quality control :)

    Regards, Miro.
