    Traveling to Estonia

End of the month, we will be heading back to Estonia. Visited once, for business a couple years ago, headed back for vacation. Will be in Tallinn for a week, with a side-excursion to Helsinki, Finland.

Last time we were there, I noticed a smattering of vintage Russian watches in various second-hand and vintage shops. But that was before I really got into watches. And there were all kinds of new watch shops in Helsinki.

On the off chance, anyone know of a great used/vintage watch shop in Tallinn? Or Helsinki? And if I were looking for vintage Russian, what specific brand/model should I be scoping out? Preference would be for a hand-wind movement with date, smaller (34-38mm) size. Stainless case prefered, but would very much consider chrome or gold plate over brass. Not looking for any kind of unicorn-type watch, just a plain, everyday, what would have been GADA watch, when it was manufactured.

If I run across a Raketa Big Zero, I'm sold already, but beyond that, what would be your top 3 watches to be on the lookout for, where vintage or second-hand Russian is concerned?

Two recommendations in or around the old town:

    1. There is a small basement-level watchmaker at 9 Nunne in the old town. Try to catch Dmitri there, he's a younger guy who will definitely help you out.
    2. Balti Jaam market has antiques (including a lot of watches). You'll pay tourist prices for sure, but that won't be too crazy as compared to ebay pricing.

Cranked through Balti Jaam last time we were there, and maybe it was an off day, but the prevalence was junky Chinese quartz.

Thanks for the tip about Dmitri!

    Re: Traveling to Estonia

Our friend from Texas now lives and work in Tallinn - mroatman. He is no longer posting regularly but I contacted him and he agreed that I could give you his email so I have sent you a PM. Redfroggy already alluded to his website and extensive collection.

    Enjoy your trip.

Got in touch with mroatman, and he was extremely gracious with recommendations. Thanks for the intro!

Turns out that shop at 9 Nunne is RIGHT NEXT DOOR to a bakery we frequented last time we were there. I was not wholly into watches at the time, and vaguely remember noticing the place, but didn't stop in. I will correct that, this time around...
