    Upscale Russians

So some pricey Raketa's have been posted previously:

Have you seen this Slava reissue? A tad less expensive, but still compared to a Vostok, yikes!

Actually that Slava doesn't look bad, but it's not a $900 watch.

I know, that's what most people said about the Raketa too. I mean the 1967 could be had for under 400. Some nice looking watches though for sure. I'd they were in the sub 400 range I would seriously consider either one of them.

Just to play the devil's advocate - why would one NOT want to pay those kind of asking prices for these Russian brands, when one may not even bat an eye if said brands were Swiss or German, for instance? Or even a higher-end Seiko?

Specification-wise they do sound comparable - automatic in-house movements, steel cases, waterproof, sapphire crystal etc.....

I d rather buy Shinola... wait no....
Really don't know who will be their customer.
But same was said about Shinola and some people do enjoy it.
    It should be special!

That Slava is a complete copy of the Soviet "monster" case. Nothing original.

The Rakata looks OK, but very expensive.

I hold no particular loyalty to any brand based on where on the globe it is made but some do. Maybe its because so many of us are spoiled with what we can get from other Russian brands for a quarter of the price.
I think they're wonderful, but I'm not in the habit of buying any watch in that price range. If I were to see one come up secondhand for half retail I'd probably give one a shot.

That's sort of the point I thought, a faithful interpretation of the long discontinued classic, which they stopped making what 25+ years ago? It says "Remake Project" on the caseback. Seems to be a common thing these days with many watch brands. A complaint I always see is "why did they make the re-issue bigger?" Or "why did they change so-and-so, the original was better". I like it when re-issues are fairly true to the original myself, as opposed to a complete re-do with only a small bit of the the original's personality.
That being said, I used to have an original years ago, and since I can't be shelling out 900 bucks for a watch I may need to keep my eyes open for a nice vintage.

Watch pricing will forever remain a mystery to me. The price on these is high compared to Vostok, but quite reasonable compared to what some people shell out for microbrand watches. High WR, sapphire crystal and an in-house movement from a well known maker (Raketa is ancient) vs something from an unknown microbrand that just bought some Swiss movements and stuffed them into Chinese cases with Chinese dials. Personally I don't get it, but to each their own.

I wonder what movement is in the Slava? Certainly not the old soviet Slava 2427 which was barely workable for a moderate priced watch.
