I have old Fuji Finepix F30 and I am very satisfied with it. Excellent performance for night shots, ISO 800 is clean and very low noise, and it has manual control for aperture/shutter speed setting. THis camera has been discontinued, but I assume the new generation (eg. F31d) should perform at least as good as the F30

12 mp or more?! You should really go for a lower mp number (7-10) but spend the same cash. Cameras with loads of mp but no optical quality etc doesn't make you a happy snapper! My latest buy was a Sony comapct with Carl Zeiss lens. Great quality both optical and build quality.

Regardless the price, which brand and model do you think is the best, 10mp or up.

Thanks and sorry asking you always the same

Well, I like the Sonys with the really sharp Carl Zeiss lenses, you can´t go wrong with one of those. But there´s load of independent tests on the internet, so browse around. I only got links to pages in swedish so...

    In that price range...

In that price range... forget about 12 mega pixels... Why do you want or should even need 12 MegaPixels is beyond me.

There are a couple of choices open to you...

    Olympus 850SW

    &

    Canon PowerShot A470

Of course the best one was 5.2 MegaPixels and was a Konika/Minolta G500, no longer produced but had full manual controls if you so wished, truly sharp and had a marvelous Zeiss Lens on it

For compact cameras - really depends on the models, Canon, Nikon and Olympus... Canon and Olympus having the best one at the moment for DSLR that's another story, regardless of the brand you choose find a camera you will use and in the end when it comes to photography it is not the camera you use but how you use it

Do not go by megapixels. Compact cameras have tiny sensors and when manufacturers heed the advertising department's demand for more megapixels the consumer pays the price in additional digital noise at high ISOs and aggressive in-camera noise suppression that turns detail into mush. Six to 8 MPs in a compact camera is quite sufficient. For the record, I think the overall best compact cameras are being made by Canon at the present moment.
