    Very interesting. My next camera toy is going to be a nice flash, but for now I just leave it off because of the limited settings on the built-in. I'll try building a "bouncer" and see how that works for me.

    Yeah in fact I would really prefer to leave flash off most of the time, unless when trying out something new.

    you can also go the easy way and use a flash diffuser.

    And for the realy cheap way you can use a piece of paper for difusing the flashlight.

    BTW I think there are subtle differences with bounce and diffused direct. Diffused direct is still 'direct' whereas a wall bounce provides more even diffusion (weaker).
