Cool Canon 100-400L IS USM lens

I am about to get me a 100-400L IS USM lens.
Does anybody here has such a lens?
And if so, what are your experiences if I may ask?
    Kind Regards,
    GJ

I've heard that the 70-200 2.8 with a 2x converter can have images just as good as the 100-400.

I have the 400 5.6L and 70-200 2.8L non-IS, but no 100-400. By all accounts I've read it's a great lens though! Can't recall any real complaints about it other than maybe 'zoom creep' when it's tilted downwards, due to the sliding zoom rather than rotating zoom. Don't remember seeing any other complaints about it.

Hey Matt, you ever thought about using the 2x converter?

    Thanks Matt,

That is the only thing I have (had) second thoughts about, the Push Zoom ''thing''.
I think Canon made it that way for a reason.

    Hey Ravage,
In theory that should double the range right?
    Could be interesting..
And these converters are not too expensive as well..
    Kind Regards,

I have the 100 - 400 lens. A very good companion for trips where you can't take all your equipment with you and perhaps you only need to take one.
Beautifully balanced although people will comment on the weight, which starts out feeling comfortable but will become annoying the longer you carry it, either in its pouch or on the camera.

Minimum of a monopod and/or tripod....much discussion if you can keep the IS turned on if loaded on a 'pod'. Answer yes you can.....but not constantly and high volume quantity of shots.

If you can source it from a bidding site (especially if you can inspect and collect it) then do so, good examples have been on eBay for a little while.

    In two words. Buy it!

Doubt it! The 100-400L, on its own, is very sharp. Even with the 1.4x Extender, it looks like this:

I'd say that the 70-200 with 2x TC will give you nice images, but they will not stand up to close scrutiny as well as the 100-400L on its own.

There is a good but old thread on this http://photography-on-the.net/forum/...d.php?t=172855

You're right it won't ever be as good, but it is not bad. There are some good examples and bad examples in the thread.

I have seen some other pictures around the web that are just awesome with the 2x or 1.4x converter.

That just goes to prove that ultimately it's the image, not how sharp it is, that is important. There are plenty of crappy sharp images on the Internet...

Re: Canon 100-400L IS USM lens

I used to have the Nikon 80-400. A fun lens to use, but I didn't use it as much as I should. To me, it was just too heavy to carry around at 1,3 kg.
My regular carry around lens today is 18-200
