Jordan. Petra was established by the Nabataens, one of the most gifted people in history. They originally came form the Arabian Peninsula more than 2200 years ago and settled in the South of Jordan. They controlled the region´s trade routes, protected caravans (myrrh, indian spices, silk, ivory).
Profits out of their business enabled them to set up and organize a powerful kingdo that stretched to Damascus and included parts of the Sinai and Negev deserts, effectivly ruling the greater part of Arabia. Try wikipedia to find out more.
