Hong Kong - Nam Sang Wai Wetlands

Some shots from a rather unknown place in Hong Kong, the Nam Sang Wai Wetlands. You won't see any of Hong Kong's skyscrapers from here....

This is Chung Hau Yu Man San Tsuen - a tiny village at the southern end of the Nam Sang Wai wetlands. Here the ferry into the wetlands crosses the Kam Tin River to Shan Pui Tsuen:

That's the ferry over the Kam Tin River. Fee: HK$ 5 per person:

Chung Hau Yu Man San Tsuen - a closer shot:

    Some landscape impressions:

Really rural here - that pond below has been used to grow something (looks like Lotus - but not sure). The shack on the left must have been toppled over by some typhoon...

The main reason to come to the wetlands is the abundance of birds, like this Little Egret:

Lovely photographs, thank you for sharing.
I've not seen much of rural HK, as the only pictures and videos we seem to get over here are of the city, bright lights, neon signs...

The hills are nice - they look like green cloth has been draped over the landscape in folds.

Hey cnmark, these are awesome pictures. I didn't even know this place existed!

How can I get there from the city?

Again, terrific pictures. Thanks for sharing.

    Directions by public transport:
Reachable by MTR West Rail Line, Yuen Long station.
    (MTR Route Map here, PDF)

    From Central (Hong Kong Station)
    - MTR Tung Chung line until Nam Cheung, there change onto the West Rail line
    - MTR West Rail line to Yuen Long.

From Kowloon (Tsim Sha Tsui Station)
    - MTR Tsuen Wan line until Mei Foo, there change onto the West Rail Line
    - MTR West Rail Line to Yuen Long.

    At Yuen Long station:
Exit the station towards north, Long Wo Road.
    - On Long Wo Road turn left (westward) and walk until you reach Yuen Long Kau Hui Road.
    - Turn right (roughly north) into that road and follow it until you reach Shan Pui Road.
    - Turn right (about east-northeast) into Shan Pui Road, follow Shan Pui Road for about 150 to 200 metres, when you see a well used dirt path on the left (north), follow this path until you reach that wonderful ferry.

A walk completely around the wetlands on the ring road (Nam Sang Wai Road) is about 8 km. One can walk all around and reach the MTR station without using that ferry again. Time depends on your number of photo stops - better add 50% more time to your initial estimate....

    Recommended Hong Kong hiking map:
    "Northwest New Territories"
Published by: Survey and Mapping Office, Lands Department
    ISBN 962-567-200-1
    Available at the better bookstores.
