So I think you should get ... a ... good one. Look. It is wasting my time to recommend a $500 camera and then you say that's nice, but way too expensive. So I then recommend a $50 camera and you say that's nice, but not good enough for you. But OK, I'll give you a starting point. The Canon Powershot G12 is a great camera from a major manufacturer that has a good built-in flash, macro mode, essentally all the common bells and whistles with manual overrides if you want to take it further than the typical point and shoot camera (e.g. for lume shots). You can google it or take a quick look at it here on Amazon: Amazon.com: Canon G12 10MP Digital Camera with 5x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.8 inch Vari-Angle LCD: Camera & Photo

+1 to Gaijin. It all depends on how deep you want to get into photography. I am an amateur photographer, so I've spent thousands in gear over a bunch of years - so I"m pretty deep in. If you are just starting out and wanting to expand beyond a cell phone - get a good point-n-shoot. The Canon G12 (or earlier models) is a fine way to start.

Hell, the G12 isn't just a 'fine' start, imho, it's an awesome start. It's one of those fallback compacts that people who are usually dSLR shooters like (the Canon S95 and the Panasonic LX5 being popular others).

I have been using the G10 for a few years now and it's just one of those cameras that feels right. I'd recommend the G10, but if you can find one new, they are selling for almost twice as much as the current model G12.

yeah I own a G10 also and it´s an awesome camera!! it´s really pleasant to see what you can accomplish with this little machine, I really encourage you dunl12496j to give a chance to the Canon G12 you won´t be sorry! great MACRO, improved ISO (low light performance), you can shoot in RAW, really nice LCD screen, decent flash... go for it!!

If you don't want to spend too much, you could go for a Point and Shoot such as the Fuji F200EXR which has a sharp contrasty lens and good latitude (exposure range so less burnt out highlights) it also has a decent enough Macro mode and costs about $100 or so!
