    Miramar Air Show 09

On the hike in from where I parked I saw some helicopters:

Then they flew right over me:

    Some cool stuff inside:

A marching band inside the airplane:

Some low-flying aircraft parked near the gates

I have a bunch more to process and those will come later. I'd have even more if I hadn't forgotten my 4gb card >_< Oh well. I ran out just toward the end of the Blue Angels show, and that was the end of the event, so I made it through.

    Superb work!

    Small print - please squint
One small point of critique, the airborne shots of the helicopters do look as if the helos suffer from engine failure (sorry). The rotors are "frozen".

The trick to avoid this "frozen" effect is to use a rather slow shutter speed (slower than 1/250s). The resulting motion blur on the rotor blades gives the rotors a "turning" appearance. Applies to prop airplanes as well.

You have to have a very steady hand (or better a tripod) to do this with a long telephoto lens - a VR lens is helpful as well. Some of the more famous air-to air photographers even shoot at 1/125s (or slower) out of the open doors of flying airplanes.

Yeah those were shot at 1/1500. It was a really bright day and they passed overhead kinda quickly so I didn't have time to fiddle with the settings. If I get another chance, I'll know to stop down the aperture. For some reason, my reflex is to adjust shutter speed while metering rather than aperture.

Some planes parked outside the show grounds:

Either they're hired photographers, or very intrepid show-goers:

A civilian-owned and operated aerobatics group, "Patriots" or something:

The Blue Angels' support plane, "Fat Albert:"
