Photographs appear collapsed to a sliver in Large Icon View

    Hi,

As I browse the watch forums, I sometimes come across a beautiful photograph that I'd like to have and referrence, so I save it. Sometimes, some of these photographs appear as long horizontal slivers in Large Icon view mode and they also appear collapsed in regular picture viewer software. But if opened in explorer they are fine. What's up with these pics? Some kind of copyright protection? What's the point, you're posting them in a public forum!

    Thanks in advance...

There is no copyright protection that works like that.

I'd say it's an issue with your machine or something. Can you take a screenshot of what the problem is?

It's not an issue with my machine. Only a few photos are affected. I think they usually come from photobucket or flicker. PM me your email so I can show you an example, if you want.

It sounds really odd, I've never seen this issue myself. If you right click and choose save image as if you are on IE, then you should be be able to save fine.

Give something like MS Paint a go to open the images, I bet they look fine their also.

Actually, paint can't open half of them.

if this photo is saved to your desktop, does the icon appear normal?

Yup, that picture works fine for me. I'm running Windows 7.

I would guess that there is something installed on your machine that is causing the issue. This is likely not a windows issue, but another software component.

Have you installed any Photo applications or other graphics tools, maybe some video codecs? I would suggest uninstalling some apps of those apps and see if that fixes the issue.

This is the strangest thing. On another machine running XP, these pics are fine. On this laptop, running Vista, as I said only a small minority of jpegs display this behaviour. So as you suggest, some prog or codec or something, along with some little characteristic of these particular photos, is causing this result. But what? What do I have on here? Quicktime, PowerDVD, Picasa? These progs will cause Windows Photo Gallery and the file Icon views to appear squashed into a thin horizontal line? Weird.

That's my guess. Sometimes some software installs components and the combination of software causes the problem. I'd take a good gamble that if you set the laptop back up it will work again fine, but that's a lot of effort to do.

It would likely be the fastest way to resolve the issue. Did this happen recently? Can you remember when the problem happened. Windows has a role back feature which stores your system settings at various time, generally when the system updates or an application installs. Some times if it was in the last few weeks you can role back to the point the item was installed.

Computers can be a nightmare, my mac crash big time last month and I had to set it up from scratch, lost a ton of my files too. My Win 7 machine has been nothing but perfect.

Also think about upgrading to Win 7, it works far better than Vista ever did, all my machines are running it great.
