    $3 Flea Market Chocolate Hamilton

I headed out to my normal Sunday flea market stop and noticed a new vendor there. She had a bunch of junk jewelry and this Hamilton Self Winder was the only watch. It was on a broken Speidel band and was not working and you could hear shaking on the inside. I got it home and opened it up and found that the entire self winding assembly had unscrewed and was floating in the back. One screw was lodged in the third wheel. Fortunately all the screws were in there and after a quick tear down, rebuild and a little work on the outside she’s a great runner. I love the chocolate dial. I just need to get a strap that fits.

Wow, what a find. I love stories like this. I collect and restore old tobacco pipes (like Dunhill, etc.) and that's like finding a Dunhill in a box of junk.
Your restoration work is also impressive, to have the confidence to take apart and repair a watch must feel pretty good!

I am not sure if it’s confidence or stupidity. I have about 15 watches that I’ve messed up mostly the hair springs. I just keep on practicing. And I have to agree I am really thrilled at how it turned out. I also got a nice 1968 Timex Marlin and a very nice Elgin 295 6S movement With an absolute perfect dial for a couple bucks each.

I have the same model. It's a circa-1976 Hamilton Dateline A-690, Grade 821 (ETA cal. 2783). Here's a couple of pics of my example.

    JimDon:
Just like the R&R song "Another one bites the dust" EXCEPT this one DIDN'T bite the dust!!!!
Kudos for giving this one a new life. Luv to hear instances of watches being given 2nd lives.
Most Trade Days and Flea Markets in my area operate on weekends. Unfortunately I work on
weekends. Ditto Estate Sales as well. The few sales I've been able to get to only had POS
    watches available.
