$300 vintage gold chronograph.. some questions for the experts..

I got this Dorex chronograph on ebay for $300. it's 18k solid rose gold, venus column wheel movement, purportedly in working order. I think it needs a little bit of TLC. I'm newly sick with the watch obsession, so some guidance is welcome.

    My questions are.
am Dorex a known brand? any info?
how old would this be, approximately?
do you think $300 is a good price? (nobody else bid on it!)
and anybody knows what type of spring bars or strap go on a watch like this? (strange lugs..)

I will post proper photos when the watch arrives, but till then, here are the ebay photos.

    Cheers!
    Dave

I'm not familiar with the brand but it looks like 1940s to me. If everything is as it appears, and the movement operates properly, I would say $300 is about right. Last month I picked up this pristine 18K 1950s Titus for around $650.

Your watch looks very nice. It looks like it could use a cleaning, which should cost about $100 to $200. This is more expensive than normal, as a chronograph is far more complicated than a regular handwound watch. It also could use a new crown.

Dorex is likely a house brand for some European jewelry store. That was the manner in which most of these watches were sold in 1940's and 50's.

Is the outer case back very thin gold? If so, then you must use the inside case cover, otherwise the case will be badly dented when you try to wear it. A specialist watchmaker might be able to source an inside caseback if yours is missing. I know of one, you can PM me for more information.

They do make special springbars that have a hole at each end for the pins on the watch case. These are sometimes called "female" springbars. Any watchmaker should be able to supply these. Once you have the proper springbars installed, then any 20mm strap (mine is 20mm) should fit.

I think $300 is a pretty good price for this type of watch provided it is in running condition. The Venus movement is a little more desirable than the Landeron that you see in these most of the time.

    Hope this helps,
    gatorcpa

What can I add to what's already been said?
yes, 1940's definitely, Venus movement, without a doubt, which is quite desirable. Once again, I think what needs to be stressed here, is what a bargain you have made. Chronographs from that period, good ones, that is, are currently VERY fashionable (because of the looks and the often out of this world quality and craftsmanship that went into making them) and so are also extremely desirable. As a result, even an average one will often go for anything in excess of $500, even for a base metal case model. It is often said that an extra $500 should immediately be added to the value for pretty much anything with a solid gold case.
In other words, you've paid $300 for a $1000 watch!
    Congratulations!
    Wear it in health!

    Hi -

Agree with the sentiments and thoughts expressed here so far, with one tiny addition:

Make sure that your watch is serviced by a competent watchmaker to ensure that you will have many, many years of enjoyment. And while you may end up putting almost as much money into the watch as you spent on it, think of it as having purchased as diamond in the rough that you now need to have polished...

    well, thanks for the encouragement!

this is my first vintage chrono (the other two I have are a '95 speedmaster reduced, and a Poljot aviator) (btw. the poljot works a *lot* better than the speedmaster, which tends to spend 95% of its life at the omega agents while they try to fix it with different sizes of hammers) - anyway - as soon as the watch arrives I'll take some photos - go around getting it cleaned up - and more photos then :)

    cheers to all who replied!
