    $5 Accutron yard sale pickup

Went by my usual thrift store today but was closed. So I was just driving around and seen a yard sale and decided to stop. Picked up this 1977 Bulova Accutron with a 218 movement. Cleaned it up a little and put a new battery in. It's working, but its running considerably slow. In fact, very slow. 20 mins slow in the past 30 mins. Any suggestions what the problem might be? Thanks.

I'm guessing that you didn't get the "extended warranty" when you purchased it, did you???????????

AhHaI I can see your problem .
You have been conned ,send it back and get a refund. It has one coil missing.

    Its a 219 not 218
Probably needs a wash and lube.

I didn't even pay attention to that, I was stuck on the caseback. So I wonder if someone changed the caseback or movement?? So would this take a different battery? I bought a 344 for a 218 movement. Wash and lube??? I'd like to get it back to normal timing.

Your case style is GT-3648, which my supplement #1 ABC case parts catalog shows should have a 2182G movement. However, that's now the 2nd or 3rd time that I've come upon the catalog showing something should have a 2182 movement and it actually had a 2193.10 (both are day/date), and vice versa. So, perhaps they were changed out, perhaps not. Your case is dated N7 (1977), the last year of production of tuning fork Accutron timepieces, so perhaps they were using interchangeable movements? Who knows?

I'd feel perfectly comfortable with the 2193.10 movement, as there are actually less in production than 2182's, and they work quite well from what I've read. I have one, not exact but similar in construction to yours, and after it was serviced it's been running VERY well.

As to battery, the 218 and 219 use the same replacement silver oxide battery, the 344, like you purchased.

    Cheers to a great pick!

Appreciate the comments and info my friends. I found a pdf on line that gives procedures in tearing down the movement for cleaning. For $5, I'm gonna attempt this myself when I get my work desk back. Hopefully in another month or so.
