    14K 218 Accutron issue

I asked in the Accutron forum but figured I'd ask here too. I picked up this 14K Accutron case in a lot of stuff last week from a local jewelers' family. It was a great bonus to find.

It was empty, so I went thru my Accutron movements to find one for it. The one I found hums, sets, and changes date properly. The seconds hand sweeps correctly, but the hour and minute hands don't move.

The cannon pinion looks good and clean and the dial washer is present. Any Accutron experts have an idea where I should start? I've gotten where I feel comfortable with most service jobs but haven't really gotten into an Accutron yet.

Did you check everything worked before casing.
Humming just means there is power but it may not be transmitting to the wheels for multiple reasons .

All four wheels visible from the back are moving.

I pulled the dial and hands again and I'm going to check to make sure pinion gears are meshing correctly and put a new dial washer on and try that.

Well, dial side gears appear to mesh well and I put on a new dial washer to no effect. Maybe I should try a Pinon and hour cannon from a different movement?

    Re: 14K 218 Accutron issue

Most likely it is that the centre wheel assembly is stuffed . The fourth wheel drives the centre wheel which in turn drives the hour and minute wheel HOWEVER the ( excuse lay talk) the large outside wheel of the centre wheel drives the centre by friction. So if that is worn everything will work ,including setting time and second hand except that the hour and minute hands will not operate. When you set the time the inner pinion of the centre wheel turns and operates the hour and minute but the large outer wheel is held firm by the fourth wheel
    got that!

Got it. That makes 100% sense. So, could tightening the Canon pinion be a solution?

    No,
Take off the hands , dial, date works, hour wheel .
Firstly while looking at centre wheel pull out stem to set time position and turn . You will see what Ibmean.
Then push in stem so the movement operates . Look closely at the centre wheel ( a mark or drop of grease on a tooth ) and you will probably see that the fourth wheel turns the outer centre wheel but it is not turning the centre .
try putting the hour wheel on and see it it still turns.

Well I think you have provided me with the answer to my problem. I'll look up some diagrams and see if I'm up to replacing the wheel after I understand it. Lol.

I have parts, but they're used so it may be a crapshoot.

Thank you so much, I really appreciate the help. I think I'm gonna clean this 18s Elgin to make me feel useful tonight, then pull the dial, date wheel, etc on this Accutron tomorrow.

You've given me a good description and I feel like I'll understand it after I see it in (non)action.
