    1950s Jaquet Droz Chronograph

    Hi all,

Whilst browsing my local market for a nice vintage watch I came across a beautiful Jaquet Droz 50s (or possibly 60s) chrono. I was intrigued as I hadnt seen one before. Ive since been trying to find out Jaquet Droz brand history between 1950 - 1970 and there isnt a lot to go on! I know they had no affiliation with the brand as we know it today and the brand failed in the quartz crisis but thats about it..

What I am most interested in is what movement might be inside the chrono I saw. Some places say Valjoux and some say Landeron.
Unfortunately I wasnt smart enough to snap a pic but im really interested in buying the watch. It has the 2 sub-dials at 3 and 9 and looks like most 50s chronos. Just want to know what I might be paying for, so anybody might have any ideas?

    thanks in advance!

    Hi and welcome.
    Sounds most interesting.
    Any photos?
That would help. Dial, and movement.
    Thanks

    Hi there,

    welcome to this forum.

Unfortunately the capabilities of forums are overestimated. Most already fail with ordinary standard miracles, like answering your question.

I didnt get any pics unfortunately but its similar to this one (different hands and indexes) - (image courtesy of fratellowatches.com)

whats the sort of price ranges for 1950s chrono's? The asking price is £550 but I feel like that might be a bit steep

Hi, that is a nice looking watch
I do not think £550 is so excessive.
The links I gave you to ebay, they should find what you want pretty quickly.
Set up an advanced search of ebay

Jaquet Droz chronograph + World Wide-->Search-->Save.

Each day you will get a list.
    Good Luck

I don't know much about this particular name, but if it has a Landeron or a Valjoux movement, then it is worth looking into. I highly suggest having a look at the movement. You don't need to know all about them, but general appearance is important.

Does it have any rust/ corrosion/ general gunk?
Do the parts look like they belong together? Often what we call a "marriage" watch is thrown together from several watches.
Does it work properly? Top button should start/ stop the chrono (the central seconds hand), bottom resets to zero. It should line up with the 12 nicely. Left subdial is continuous seconds, and the right subdial records up to 30 or 45 minutes.
    Condition of the dial?
    Overall condition of the case?

    Good luck!

thanks for the tips Dan. From what I can gather, the movement is likely Landeron and I wasnt sure if they are good quality movements or not - heard mix reviews! but the movement did look in good condition and working when I first saw the watch. Am going back tomorrow!

So I finally got a picture of the watch from the dealer. It has been with the watch maker being serviced which is why I havent got it yet.. Pick below. Please let me know your thoughts!

Im not convinced the hands are originales as I havent seen any other 50's chrono with this style but the dealer says they are.. any ideas?

Only perhaps that it's more likely 60's than 50's from the style,,,
    So many watches.....so little time.....
