    1970s (ish) Tissot ID?

    Hello there,
I posted this question in the Tissot forum, but didn't get too far, so I thought I'd try here.
I have an older Tissot (details and photos here: https://forums.watchuseek.com/showthread.php?t=373467 ), and I'm interested in learning more about it, beyond the basic stats of the movement and date. Basically some of the softer details around marketing (product line, etc).
If anyone here in the vintage forum can help, I'd really appreciate it!
    Thanks,
    Neil

The best answers to your questions would come from Tissot. I would email them your serial number, and perhaps the photos, with your specific questions. I would bet you can get answers to, beyond the basic stats, model name, product line and countries distributed to.

Thanks, I didn't realize that this was an option! I will try and see what happens.
    Cheers,

I looked at the pics in the other thread. I can not tell if it is an ETA 2780 or not. A movement pic that shows the escapment is best.

This is a 70s sort of watch. There should be a serial number on the movement. We have a post in the 'archives' that tells year by serial number.
"Forever is composed of nows." - Emily Dickinson

"The watch has to be surrounded by a history.
You need more than just a great design. You need to create an atmosphere around the product.
Who is the company behind it? Why are they using this material?
People need to be able to identify the watch with themselves. It's based on emotion." - Ralph Furter

...that's just my opinion and I've been wrong before and will be again and might be now!

I think you are right, they don't look the same at all. I have cross-reference the serial number (third photo in my linked post) with the archived list, and it does indicate something around 75-77. Thanks for your thoughts.

Many thanks Roland, that is an interesting piece of history, and my watch bears some similar features to the 1977 Seastar in your link. I find it strange that what appears for all intents and purposes to be a 2770 movement would be stamped with 2780, but the picture tells a compelling story!

I have sent an message to Tissot, so I'll see what I find out there. Cheers, Neil

For the benefit of any future searches, I thought I'd provide the note I received in response to my inquiry to Tissot about the history and details around this watch.
Some of this I was already aware of, but there are some new bits of info that I thought the folks here might find interesting. Here is what Tissot had to say:

"According to this pictures, I can tell you that is a Tissot automatic watch with indication of the date and a Tissot caliber number 2780. The Tissot caliber number was produced from 1977 to 1979, so your watch should date from the same time. Unfortunately, I can’t be more precise and as we’ve really been through all our old documentation, I’m afraid we are at a dead end.
...In fact, this serial number is not registered in our swiss Tissot archives. Perhaps the watch could be a national production. From 1950 until 1984 approximately, Tissot exported to the affiliate companies of France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and USA movements alone, with or without dial. These affiliate companies bought themselves dials, hands, cases, bracelets and assembled these watches in their countries. This allowed them to have specific watches for their markets, in agreement with the main factory in Le Locle. Such watches were called “National Production” and Tissot Le Locle did not keep any records of them.
Today, our collection is very rich and corresponds with the trends in the markets in the whole world, no more “National Production” is made. "

OK, that's quite interesting, but not particularly what you were after!!

Oh well, just enjoy the watch and know that you are wearing something a little more unusual that your not likely to see anyone else wearing!!

It's important to note that the factory did answer back with what information they have. Most companies are happy to do this, however, records are notorious for being incomplete.
