    1973 Pogue 6139

Got this Pogue coming to me now. It's a birth year watch for me. Been scouring the net for tips on cleaning the dial. Question: is this "cleanable" or should try to find a replacement? Don't really want a replica but don't need a whole other watch either. Thoughts??
The black around the sub dial and random black dots are what I'm referring to of course. Most likely prior water damage from my research here.

If its dots of flaking lume from the hands then it should brush off. If caused by water ingress then the mechanism should be inspected/overhauled by a watchmaker, the good news is that parts are still readily available for the 6139.

Some people use the term "Pogue" loosely to refer to any yellow-dialed 6139, but others are more precise about it and only use the term to describe the exact variant worn by Colonel Pogue. If you read up on it, you will see the various dials and other variations that Seiko produced; there are a lot of internet resources.

To get somewhat back to the original question, I doubt very much if this is "cleanable". This is pretty much typical wear on these dials when there
has been some moisture intrusion over the years, particularly around the sub dials. There are non original replacement dials available on ebay, in around the $50
range, but then originality is lost. I'd leave it alone if it were mine.
I have found that if condition is important, sometimes it's best to wait until a better example comes around and spend more up front,
particularly in cases like these 6139's that aren't particularly rare, but actually common.
