    Confused 1987-88 Movado Museum watch????

I received this watch as a gift in 1988. From what i remember, it cost something like $800 back then. Its a Movado Museum watch, completely black. The chrystal goes all the way to the outer edge, flush with the watch case. The face is black except for the gold dot at 12 oclock, and gold hour and minute hands. it has no day or date feauture. It says "swiss Movado quartz" in tiny gold letters at the bottom of the face, in that order...on the back it says.."87-40-882N" and "water resistant"...black leather wrist band...and the watch is extremely thin overall, something like 3mm thick

does anyone have any information on this watch? a model number or something? is it of any value today?

i'll try and get some pictures this week, but any help would be appreciated

    Hi -

Welcome to the forum! Gald to see you here...

Just remembering off the top of my head, the Movado Museum watch came about after the basic design - as you describe it - was made part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art's (MOMA, New York) design collection.

The watch itself is, as you correctly describe it, a very elegant and relatively thin quartz watch. Great design.

Check with the sticky at the top of our forum here regarding watch value: basically, what the market will bear. Check on past eBay auctions to see if there are any matches...

I don't know if you'll see this as this post seems pretty old.

I have a Movado from the same time period but very different watch. Our watches sound really similar when you're describing the writing on the front of the watch and what's printed on the back and lack of what's printed on the back. I do remember mine costing a lot when my mom bought it for me so authenticity seemed fine that way but I was in high school and my mom uneducated in watches. I did a search online and found one site that the writing on the front of a Movado should read "Swiss MOVADO Made" and if it reads "Swiss MOVADO Quartz" then it's a fake. I don't know what you found out on yours about it being real or fake but I would be very interested to know! Here's the link to what I found How to Identify a Real Movado Watch | eHow.com

    Thanks,
    Kevin

I only have a couple of Movado Museums but know enough to know there is some serious misinformation on that site.

The movement would be the definitive way to identify it. They used high-grade ETA quartz movements. The fakes from that era are most likely going to be generic Japanese.
I have a Tissot Rockwatch and Woodwatch from that era. Both used the same ETA quartz that Movado used. Mine are stamped Tissot, but they should pretty much look similar to this (from 1985)
