Advise on picking a service center for Tissot

Hello everyone. Not sure if my watch is 'vintage' - however it's old enough now for Tissot to say they can no longer service it through a factory service center. My Tissot World Time (approx 1971) is in need of lubrication. the crown will wind it; however it is tighter then it once was so I'm not chancing it anymore. it will keep time fine and does self-wind fine. will also run through the night having been worn all day. Hopefully it just needs to be taken apart an lubricated. It has a 788 movement.

I had a Tissot service center do a full overhaul in 2002 or 2003 and it's been fin since. However they claim to no longer have parts for it or be able to service it. Supposedly they even sent pictures to Tissot in Switzerland. So I am left with not knowing who to trust with this watch. I realize it's not overly rare and they are all over ebay; however I've owned it since 1977 when my grandfather gave it to me and would like to keep it running well. The last time I sent it to someone other then Tissot it came back to me with the day changing at the 12 o'clock position and not the 6 o'clock position and the Tissot service center had to correct that too.

Any advice on service centers that are trust-able and who may stock parts for this model would be appreciated. also would love to add a link or two to the original Gay Freres band if possible. it's always been a little snug.

Oh that is interesting - Thank you. I had no idea such an animal existed. will defiantly look into that. I don't want to change it's band; it's how I've always known the watch.

Have you checked with any good watchmakers?

Any good watchmaker should be able to service it.

    check this site

    https://net.nawcc.org/imis_15/nawcc/businesssearch/

This will allow you to search for a NAWCC approved watchmaker

I don't understand about the date change. Did you mean to say the date changed at 6 instead of 12? That is just the watchmaker not putting the hands back correctly.

It should just need a service(with a oil/cleaning and adjustment)

It is a nice watch and heirlooms are worth the money to get it running good (regardless of commonality or value)

Thank you - I've been checking through that link; however I would love some testimonials/personal experiences - otherwise it's just like going through the phone book.

the date change issue was this is a 24hr dial, wiht midnight @ the 6 o'clock position. the watch was reassembled once with the date changing assuming it was a new day in the normal 12 o'clock position. look at the pic, you can see 24 @ 6 o'clock. My grandfather gave it to me because he didn't understand how to tell time on it and thought it was broken - lol.

Actually one more thing - Tissot said they could not service the watch but would offer the "Tissot loyalty exchange program". anyone know what that is? like a trade-in program?

    Yes

They will take your old one and give you a lesser modern one.
