Ancre Automatic-What can you tell me about it?

    Hello,
I am Jaliya from Sri Lanka. I initially joined WUS because I like G shock watches, but I thought I would ask about my 'daily beater' watch. It is an Automatic and the dial says 'Ance Automatic'. It was given to my father in the late '60s or early '70s, but he did not wear it much so I took it as a daily watch (around 2005). The case has an inscription 'Etanche Controlee' and is a screwback. I have not seen the movement as I could not open it, I suppose there will be some inscription there as well. The date says 'MAA, DIN, WOE, DON, VRY, ZAT, ZON'; what language is that?
What can you tell me about this watch? I searched online but never came across this (I did find some watches named Ancre, however). Where was this built and when? Any help would be appreciated.
(I don't mind it not being a valuable watch as it is a watch and keeps good time!)

    Thank you and regards!

    Hi and welcome.

    The language is Dutch:

or possibly Afrikaans if it is Vry not Vri

    http://www.unilang.org/wiki/index.php/Afrikaans_days

The watch looks 1970's to me. The word Ancre was at one time used as a brand, but it also means 'lever' in watchmaking terms - like nearly all 'modern' mechanical watches. It is a French word, usually found on watches from France or Switzerland (German equivalent is Anker). However, the dial does not say Swiss - which it should do if Swiss - and without seeing the movement it isn't possible to say where it was made. Unless anyone else knows more.

    Hello,
Thank you for replying! I think the language is probably Dutch because my father got it from a Dutch friend. I will go to my watch serviceman and get him to open up the case and snap some pictures of it and post here. I would like to know more about this.
    Thank you!

Try searching this forum for 'Anker', the variant spelling of this brand.

This is a generic brand so there could be anything inside it, from a Bettlach Swiss pin-lever to an East German GUB Spezimatic.

From the style of it, I would say it was made some time in the 1970s.

OK, thank you. I did come across a watch named 'Anker'.
I'll visit the watch serviceman in the coming week and try and get a picture of the movement.

Well, I got some pictures of the movement. It has no names or dates written on it, however. I've attached them, I hope you all can provide me with some details.
    Regards.

I couldn't ID it quickly but it looks like it's marked under the balance wheel.
