    Another gem! Illinois "Dean" 18s

Hello all! Another sweet piece came my way for service. It was his great grandfather's and he's had it his whole life. I love it! The pendant case is a pet peeves, but I suppose it wasn't uncommon to do. I have no reason to believe this isn't original. No other casing marks or anything.

Case is beautiful coin silver, horseshoe logo, gonna have to look that one up.

Here's the case logo in case anyone knows it, I'd love to know. It's a nice quality case for sure.

rickhufnagel7...an unusual Illinois...a "2 Star" watch in one Guide, and a Find!

These clean up very nicely, and will look great after a Service. I use L&R Extra Fine, and L&R Ultrasonic Rinse, and usually see these KW's come out looking almost new!

It's fairly common for these Old Fellows to have been re-staffed, so pay special attention to balance endshake / roller jewel / and hairspring condition. I also tend to find them 'out of beat'...with no pressure on the installed balance, the roller jewel needs to be seen to rest between banking pins...a little collet adjustment is usually all that's needed.

A new mainspring is almost always a good idea...I've only seen a few that were not set. I have no problem using Swiss replacements, and really do not much care for using new old stock original items...it's tough to find one that's not a little rusty (!), and I reckon using the best spring is rather like using the best oils: the 1800's materials were pretty good, but oils & metals have improved a bit since then although (of course! ) Great Steel is Great steel, and 19th Century metal is 100% Ok with me!

Should be fun for you to work on. Enjoy!

    Michael.
