Another of my unpopular pocketwatches. Best 1906 Elgin.

This Model 190 was the best from Elgin in 12 size, and I think in any size, when it was made about 1906. Some production was marked Lord Elgin. The 190 had a mustache lever supposed improvement.
It was most expensive movement in my 1916 catalog from Elgin. I bought this heavy 18k case, not recently, from a long time collector selling off
(prematurely I thought) some of his less interesting gold watches. So was surprised to find the best in it. Typical. Old timers have not valued the 12 size. Seller did mention it was a good movement, however, but did not value accordingly. Photo does not clearly show the really fine decorative work on the plates. Catalog copy describes pretty well. Direct 12
size competitors are Maximus from Waltham, 920 Hamilton.

Lovely high end Elgin. 12s is still strangely underrated and is therefore more affordable to collect today. Good for us who really appreciate them.

Jan. 7, 2010 ebay sale of same 190 in 14k had 44 bidders up to $2500. Got to be a record price. Indication of improving interest in a good small size.?
I would have bid to about twice scrap value. Less than 1/2 the final bid. Only if I badly wanted it. Another indication that values are only what someone is willing to pay.

12 size has always been popular in Japan. There's still a lot of enthusiasm here for smaller watches, both PW and wrist watches.
