Antique shop Bulova - should I?

Saw this 1950s (??) Bulova at a local antique shop today. Unfortunately my right arm is out of commission at the moment so I was unable to open it and photograph the movement (the staff at this place is very friendly and accommodating, but don't have the know-how to do it themselves).

Stupid me forgot to get a photo of the caseback, but it was marked as 10K rolled gold plate (or was it gold filled??).

Signed Bulova crown. Winds smoothly and runs. Crystal needs a good polish.

I assume it's an older re-dial. Either that or Bulova was very sloppy with the printing (I doubt this). Since there isn't much there to print, this part doesn't bother me too much. However, they are asking $45 and won't come down on the price so I passed on it. The fact that I can't see the movement doesn't help.

Did I make the right call? I really love the style so I guess I'm having second thoughts.

I'm guessing 50's also, probably a 17j movement. Nice aged Bulova but I love picking these up at thrift shops cheaper than that. If it's running I may consider around that price but originality would be a plus. These thrift shop finds usually always need serviced which can be a little costly. It's basically worth what you would pay for it. Me??? I would still try to talk them down, if not, I have passed on them more than one time.

Thanks, bsshog. You make great points. On some level, there's a bit of a false economy in haggling over $10 or $20 when the service will run around $120 anyway (at least in my neck of the woods). I guess it's more just knowing that you got a good price!

It looks like a 1948 "His Excellency" variant unknown (dial) and should have a 21 jewel movement.

You're welcome. I don't think $45 is outrageous for the condition and the fact that it ran. An ebay one could have well cost you that much if not more considering shipping.

I agree, I'm just more of a bargain shopper myself. Running and condition is a start. The WANT, is what sets the price. Lol Even with a service, you're looking at a $200 watch at that price. Thats why I always like to try to bargain. Also another reason why I have some watch service videos to learn to service myself. Saves lots of money and makes paying a little more for a watch reasonable. But like I said, its what its worth to you my friend.

After mulling this over for a bit, I've decided I'll just sit on it for now. As bsshog so rightly says, the want sets the price. If I really wanted it I would have walked out with it.
