Picture Any info on my grandpas's HOGA watch?

    Hello,

This watch was given to me by my grandpa before he passed away. I am curious about its origin and how much it may be worth (not that I would part with it). All I found was that it's from a company called HOGA WATCH LTD some time between 1946-1959.

    Thank you,

    Here are two massive pictures:

Thanks for posting. We might be able to tell you more if we saw a photo of the actual watch movement. The name Hoga is not familiar to me unfortunately, so I don't know if they made their own movements or used Unitas or some other ebauche as a movement source.
As for valuation please read the sticky notes at the top of the forum page. I can say that the watch will be far more valuable to you as a memory of your grandfather than it would be as a collector's item.

    Thanks Ray.

I saw the sticky. I will never sell this watch but I was just curious if it was an antique, where it came from, etc. etc. Google is not much help on this one.

By "picture of the movement" do you mean a picture of the back of the open watch? In that case I don't think I will ever open it.

Also, for the past few years, I have been winding it once a month (5-6 revolutions) or when I remember to so that the mechanism doesn't go bad... I don't know much about watches as you can tell. Do you have any advice on how I can preserve the watch?

    Thanks.

Pocket watches are not like wristwatches - sealed tightly against dust or moisture. You can probably open the watch simply by unscrewing the back.
I assume you have never had the watch cleaned or serviced. Since it's now about 60 years old, its lubrication will have dried up so if you don't get it serviced it's better to not run it at all. The movement is damaged far more by running it dry than it is if left in a stationary (run down) state.
Pocket watches can be preserved for hundreds of years if they are cleaned and lubricated every 5-10 years (5 years if you run them all the time, 10 years if you don't.)

uh oh... I guess I won't be winding this watch again.

I tried to unscrew it but it won't open. I can't even fit a knife in between to pop it open.

What would it cost (ballpark) to get this cleaned and lubricated anyway?

    Thanks.

Probably around $100 US to do it right.

Anybody else out there who might know what this is?

Or any ideas how I can get it to open so I can take a pic?

Here's a link to opening watch cases. Take it to a watchmaker if you are not sure.
