    Automatic Eterna that isn't Eterna-matic

    Hello all,

Sorry for my ignorance, but is it possible to have an Eterna Automatic that isn't an Eterna-matic? I only ask because I saw an auction recently that listed an 'Eterna Automatic' and it didn't look old enough to be from before 1948. Is this fair reasoning? Here are some pictures:

    Name: Eterna 1.jpg

    Name: Eterna 2.jpg

Thanks for any advice, I'm really curious about this.

Everything is above board. The Eterna-matic specifically refers to the rotor winding movement with ball bearings to hold the rotor. This was invented by Eterna/ETA in 1948 and given that name as a catchy marketing designation. They originally wanted to call it Ball-matic but it was supposed to be presented to the public in the US and it was feared that it might be associated with nasty, ink-blotching biros ("ball-point pens") so the name Eterna-matic was developed on the spot instead. Your movement is a hammer ("bumper") automatic without ball bearings so, even if it was post-1948, it wouldn't have a right to the famous name. Still, I expect that it won't be too far post-1948 (if not pre-1948, despite your doubts) - once the Eterna-matic was developed, I find it difficult to imagine that older, more "redundant" movements would still have been much used by Eterna.
