Awesome and interesting but inexpensive recommendations?

    Hey all -

I was hoping you guys can maybe give me some suggestions as far as an inexpensive (like a couple hundred bucks or less inexpensive) but cool/interesting watch. I tend to really gravitate towards 35mm or larger vintage military/pilot/chrono type pieces. I hesitate to use the word beater - but I'm looking for something inexpensive but still super cool to wear when I don't want to wear a nicer piece. I'm hoping there is such a thing.

    Thanks in advance!

"Cool" and "interesting" mean very different things to different people, so it would be helpful if you could start the ball rolling by posting some photos of watches that are appealing to you. Some military watches care inexpensive, but they are usually small, so it would also be helpful if you could be more specific about your requirements of size, case material, etc. Otherwise, people will just waste their time giving you suggestions, only to have you say, "oh yeah, but it's too small," or "looks nice, but I don't like chrome-plated cases", or "that's interesting, but I wanted a black dial."

If you look for "cool" and "interesting" and "inexpensive" then it's hard to beat 1970s Caravelle jump hour watch

here is a video I've made:

Thanks for the feedback. I would be hoping for steel (I’m not into gold etc), hopefully at least 35mm, and as far as styles I like the contemporary maker examples would be things like Sinn, Stowa, Nomos, Muhle. I really like Bauhaus, Flieger, maybe field watches etc. I hope that helps.

If you want an actual issued military watch, you could take a look at these. They are in the 34-35mm range and have a simple military/field type of dial. Some of them can be found in your price range; probably not a top-notch example, but a legit piece. The pilot version is called gg-w-113 (or similarly, the infantry version was MIL-W-3818B, which is not quite as desirable as the gg-w-113) and they were issued starting in the Vietnam War era. Here is a buyers guide article and a photo of a sold example from Zaf Basha's site.

If you want something larger and/or cheaper, you should probably be looking at a modern reissue. Obviously, if you buy a vintage watch and plan to wear it, you will probably need to budget another $100-$200 for a full service.

    Dan -

This is definitely along the lines of what I was thinking - it's definitely going on the list - thanks.
