Bought my first vintage, is this an authentic Hamilton Dodson?

From my research online, the Dodson has:

    • 987A Movement
    • 10k Gold Filled
    • Two dial types, one with gold numerals and one with black numerals

    Attached are some pictures:

The seller seems pretty reputable and helpful. He told me as far as he knows everything is still original. Thanks.

Welcome to watchuseek and congrats on your first purchase.

Your watch is very nice, and I don't doubt that it is authentic; but for educational purposes, I'll mention that I suspect that the dial has been refinished at some point. The easiest way to tell is by looking at the quality of the numbers in the sub-dial. Compare to the watches at this link (one included below). Also you will notice that the bottom edge of the sub-dial border should be exactly aligned with the bottom edge of the overall border. On your watch there is a gap between the two. These differences will probably not bother you at all when looking at the dial using the naked eye. You may want to look for a better small seconds hand that doesn't extend outside the sub-dial.

Thanks for helping badbackdan! I actually saw that website beforehand but I didn't look close enough. Interesting. Well the more you know. Thankfully the seller offers a refund. I will think about it for a day or so, but I might just return the watch and get my money back. I guess these are the risks you take for vintage!

From the 1940s. The grade 987 (A) movement was made from 1937 to 1948, starting with 001 and ending with 0486300. I don't know how that spreads over this period and where to put the 0215588 serial number, but certainly after 1937 and well before 1948. Difficult to tackle this thing mathematically as there was certainly not an equal number of movements made every year. The dial should/could have been re-done to some extend and the case might have been re-plated at some stage, otherwise genuine and clear as the frist snow. Congrats!

Thanks! I did not know about the numbering of the serials. I was trying to find information about that.

Looking at the dial fonts in the catalogs, I suspect yours is from 1938-1940. The 1941 and 1946 models had more rounded shapes without the little flourishes.

Edit: On the other hand, this serial number table dates the movement to 1941-42: Re: Hamilton Serial Numbers - Vintage Watch Forums
